Job summary

Elby Professional Recruitment represents a well-established construction firm in Southwestern Ontario seeking a Financial Controller to own accounting and financial operations, reporting directly to the General Manager. This hands-on role combines strategic oversight with meticulous attention to monthly close, cash flow, and project accounting.

You will lead budgeting, treasury activities, and tax compliance, mentor one staff member, and shape internal controls.

Qualifications

• CPA designation (or equivalent)
• 5+ years of accounting/finance experience in construction
• Strong full-cycle accounting knowledge including budgeting and cost control
• Experience with Sage accounting software is preferred
• Strong MS Office skills (Excel/Word/PowerPoint)
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage deadlines
• Experience liaising with ownership and external partners

Responsibilities

• Own day-to-day accounting operations: AR, AP, GL, cost accounting, government remittances, inventory accounting, banking, revenue recognition, payroll
• Lead the annual budget process, financial forecasting, and variance analysis
• Prepare and publish monthly financial statements
• Provide financial analysis and strategic counsel on land and lot purchase opportunities
• Build pro-forma statements and cash flow analyses for new business decisions
• Coordinate monthly construction loan funding with lawyers and lenders
• Develop internal control policies and accounting procedures
• Manage government reporting and tax filings
• Support month-end and year-end close processes
• Mentor one direct report

Financial Controller

Our client is a well-established, award-winning construction firm, with active and upcoming projects across the South Western Ontario region. Known for a hands-on, quality-first approach to building and a strong reputation for after-sales service, they're a lean, close-knit organization where every team member has real visibility into the business - not a large corporate environment where you're several layers removed from decisions. They're looking for a Financial Controller to take ownership of accounting and financial operations across the company, reporting directly to the General Manager. This is a role for someone who wants to lead the finance function but also genuinely enjoys being in the details - from monthly close to construction loan draws to land purchase analysis.

What You'll Do

• Own day-to-day accounting operations, including AR, AP, GL, cost accounting, government remittances, inventory accounting, banking, revenue recognition, and payroll
• Lead the annual budget process, financial forecasting, and variance analysis
• Prepare and publish monthly financial statements
• Provide financial analysis and strategic counsel on land and lot purchase opportunities
• Build pro-forma statements and cash flow analyses to support new business decisions
• Manage daily cash requirements and banking across multiple companies and project accounts
• Prepare monthly and long-term cash flow forecasts
• Develop detailed construction project budgets and cash flows
• Coordinate monthly construction loan funding with lawyers and lenders
• Liaise with cost consultants and prepare documentation supporting construction loan draws
• Develop, document, and communicate internal control policies and accounting procedures
• Manage government reporting requirements and tax filings
• Support month-end and year-end close processes
• Research technical accounting issues to maintain compliance
• Mentor and oversee one direct report

What You Bring

• CPA, CGA, CMA, CA designation
• 5+ years of combined accounting and finance experience in construction
• Strong full-cycle accounting knowledge, including budgeting and cost control
• Experience with Sage accounting software is preferred
• Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines
• Confidence interacting with management, ownership, external partners, and staff
