Job summary

Miller Thomson LLP seeks a Financial Analyst - FP&A and Profitability in Toronto or Vaughan to join our national firm. You will analyze financials, support budgeting, and drive profitability reporting across practice groups, offices, lawyers, matters and clients.

The role requires 3–5 years in accounting/forecasting, CPA in progress or completed, and strong Excel/PowerPoint skills. Experience in professional services is an asset; BI tools are beneficial.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance.
  • Working towards or recent CPA designation.
  • 3–5 years in accounting/budgeting/forecasting/reporting.
  • Law firm or professional services experience is an asset.
  • Expert knowledge of MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills with large data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Detail-oriented with ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience with BI tools is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare recurring and ad hoc financial reports and analyses.
  • Assist in monthly, quarterly, and annual management reporting packages.
  • Perform variance analysis on revenue, expenses, profitability, and KPIs.
  • Investigate and explain financial trends and fluctuations.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial data for management reporting.
  • Support presentations and reporting materials for Finance and Firm leadership.
  • Assist with annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes.
  • Collect and validate budgeting inputs; prepare supporting schedules.
  • Monitor actual results against budget and forecast and identify variances.
  • Maintain forecasting models and planning templates.
  • Support departments and cost centers throughout the budget process.
  • Prepare profitability reporting for Practice Groups, Offices, Lawyers, Matters, Clients.
  • Reconcile profitability data for consistency and accuracy.
  • Maintain profitability models and reporting tools.
  • Prepare profitability analyses and performance metrics for decision making.
  • Participate in data validation and QA for profitability reporting.
  • Support Finance in responding to information requests; collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Contribute to process improvements to enhance reporting efficiency and data quality.

We are seeking a Financial Analyst - FP&A and Profitability to join the team in our Toronto or Vaughan office.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Analysis & Reporting
  • Prepare recurring and ad hoc financial reports and analyses.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual management reporting packages.
  • Perform variance analysis on revenue, expenses, profitability, and key performance indicators.
  • Investigate and explain financial trends and fluctuations.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial data utilized in management reporting.
  • Support the preparation of presentations and reporting materials for Finance and Firm leadership.
Budgeting and Forecasting
  • Assist with the annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes.
  • Collect and validate budgeting and forecasting inputs from stakeholders.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and analytical reviews for budget and forecast submissions.
  • Monitor actual results against budget and forecast and identify variances requiring further review.
  • Maintain and update forecasting models and planning templates.
  • Support assigned departments and cost centers throughout the budget process.
Profitability Analysis & Reporting
  • Assist in the preparation of profitability reporting for Practice Groups, Offices, Lawyers, Matters, and Clients.
  • Reconcile profitability and financial data to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Support the maintenance and enhancement of profitability models and reporting tools.
  • Prepare profitability analyses and performance metrics to support strategic decision‑making.
  • Participate in data validation and quality assurance initiatives related to profitability reporting.
Business Support and Collaboration
  • Support Finance leadership in responding to requests for financial information and analysis.
  • Work collaboratively with Business Services stakeholders to gather information and provide financial insights.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives that enhance reporting efficiency, data quality, and operational effectiveness.
What You'll Bring
  • Completion of a post‑secondary degree in a related field such as Business Administration, Accounting or Finance.
  • Working towards or recent completion of an Accounting designation – i.e. CPA.
  • 3 - 5 years’ of experience in accounting/budgeting/forecasting/analytical and reporting.
  • Law firm or professional services experience an asset.
  • Expert knowledge of MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.
  • Excellent quantitative and analytical skills working with large amounts of data.
  • Outstanding communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Keen attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to handle high‑pressure situations and manage tight deadlines.
  • Experience with business intelligence tools an asset.

Compensation

We offer a market‑leading total rewards package with the expected range of the annual salary to be between $62,084 - $77,606. The final salary is influenced by the location of the incumbent and may fluctuate based on the qualifications, skills, and market considerations, ensuring alignment with internal and external pay equity standards.
