Job summary

Aviva Canada is seeking a Financial Analyst to support reinsurance accounting, reporting, and controls. You will handle monthly and quarterly close processes, reconcile balances, and prepare analyses for internal and external stakeholders.

Working in the Reinsurance Accounting team, you will interpret treaty terms, prepare journal entries, and help automate processes while maintaining strong documentation and timelines. Hybrid work options available.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, or a related discipline.
  • Progress toward CPA designation is preferred.
  • 1 to 3 years of progressive experience in accounting, financial reporting, audit, insurance, or a related financial services environment.
  • Reinsurance experience is an asset.
  • Sound understanding of financial accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, financial controls, and period-end close.
  • Familiarity with IFRS 17 and reinsurance accounting is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly accounting for reinsurance premiums, claims, commissions, recoverables, payables, accruals, and related adjustments in accordance with approved accounting policies and treaty terms.
  • Prepare manual journal entries with clear business rationale and complete supporting documentation, and submit them through the established review and approval process.
  • Perform account reconciliations and roll-forwards; investigate aged, unusual, or unreconciled balances and coordinate timely resolution.
  • Support period-end close activities and deliver accurate schedules, analyses, and explanations within established timelines.
  • Interpret key financial provisions of reinsurance agreements and translate them into accurate accounting calculations, billings, statements, and settlements.
  • Prepare or validate premium and claims calculations, including deposit and adjustment premiums, commissions, broker-related adjustments, and cash settlements, as applicable.
  • Maintain organized treaty-level records and supporting evidence to enable traceability from source data to the general ledger.
  • Coordinate with reinsurers, brokers, Claims, Treasury, Underwriting, Reserving, and other Finance teams to research and resolve accounting or settlement differences.
  • Produce management, financial, regulatory, and audit support schedules related to reinsurance balances and activity.
  • Analyze movements and variances, identify financial or operational impacts, and communicate concise explanations to reviewers and stakeholders.
  • Execute assigned controls and quality assurance checks, retain evidence of performance and review, and elevate control exceptions promptly.
  • Support inquiries from internal and external auditors and contribute to the remediation of findings or process gaps.

The Opportunity

The Financial Analyst supports the accurate, complete, and timely accounting and reporting of ceded and assumed reinsurance activity. Working within the Reinsurance Accounting team, the role performs reconciliations, prepares and reviews supporting analysis, processes accounting entries and settlements, investigates variances, and partners with internal and external stakeholders to resolve issues. The analyst also contributes to a strong financial control environment and to the continuous improvement and automation of reinsurance accounting processes.

What you’ll do

Reinsurance accounting and close
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly accounting for reinsurance premiums, claims, commissions, recoverables, payables, accruals, and related adjustments in accordance with approved accounting policies and treaty terms.

  • Prepare manual journal entries with clear business rationale and complete supporting documentation, and submit them through the established review and approval process.

  • Extract, validate, and reconcile data across reinsurance source systems, spreadsheets, databases, and the general ledger.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual work, strengthen controls, improve data quality, and standardize recurring processes.

  • Participate in system changes, user acceptance testing, process documentation, and finance transformation initiatives.

  • Maintain current procedures, process narratives, desktop instructions, and control documentation for assigned responsibilities.

What you'll bring

  • University degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, or a related discipline.

  • Progress toward a CPA designation is preferred.

  • 1 to 3 years of progressive experience in accounting, financial reporting, audit, insurance, or a related financial services environment.

  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including lookups, pivot tables, data validation, and analysis of large datasets.

  • Experience with Oracle Fusion or another enterprise general ledger, databases, Power Query, or Power BI is an asset.

  • Ability to explain financial issues clearly, document conclusions, and build effective relationships across Finance and operational teams.

  • Strong attention to detail, sound analytical judgement, ownership of deliverables, and the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.

What you’ll get:

  • The salary band for this position ranges from $70,000 – $80,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
