About Financial Services

The Financial Services division is responsible for accounting and reporting on the financial transactions of the University including specifically accounting, treasury, procurement and payables, collection services, financial systems and training and providing excellent client service, advising and assisting departments on research, budgetary and financial matters, policies and processes. We support the University by managing its financial affairs in an efficient, innovative and professional manner. We are dedicated to providing leadership, information, training, support and advice.

Client Advisory Services

The Client Advisory Services unit is a key part of this division. Their mission is to:

  • Assist in the financial management of the University Budget
  • Advise departments on financial matters, policies and processes
  • Providing training to financial personnel in units on budget management
The Opportunity

The Financial Advisor will act as a liaison between client departments and Financial Services. The Financial Advisor provides strategic financial and business advisory support to departments, applying best practices to manage budgets across all funding sources. Prepares timely and accurate financial reports for internal and external stakeholders in accordance with executed agreements and contracts, and exercises sound professional judgment to advise on key financial risks and opportunities within assigned portfolios. Additionally, the Financial Advisor will design, develop and conduct training on budget/financial management and policies and provide strategic advice on fund management on all non research cost centres related to the client. Lastly, the Advisor provides high level financial monitoring and variance analysis of funds through regular financial status updates with departments to assist with ensuring financial integrity and overall financial performance of the university.

Qualifications

To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume describing how you meet the following required qualifications:

  • Completion of post‑secondary degree in Business Management, Accounting and/or Finance; successful completion of the 3rd level of a recognized accounting designation
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience preferably in a post secondary environment with the following requirements:
    • Demonstrated understanding of financial budgeting systems, and related policies, processes and procedures;
    • Solid understanding of all functions and services in a financial environment including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Human Resources, Payroll, and Federal/Provincial programs/guidelines and other funding agencies; Advanced accounting skills including knowledge of accounting standards proposed by CPA Canada, fund accounting, accruals, deferrals, etc. as it relates to a non‑profit environment.
    • Relevant, progressive experience using automated accounting and budgeting systems and experience working in an automated financial services department
    • Demonstrated experience working with non‑research project accounting practices to collaborate with University, government and non‑government requirements and policies
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Exceptional problem solving skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience with Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Spreadsheet, Slides) and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and familiarity with understanding of major business processes softwares ie. ERP systems such as Oracle Government Financials
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills to build strong partnerships and relationships with key stakeholders within the organization.
  • A commitment to customer service to staff, faculty and students
