Job description

FINANCE MANAGER
Welcome to our Community!

Who We Are
The Nicomen Indian Band is a Nlaka’pamux First Nation located in the Fraser Canyon region of British Columbia. With deep cultural roots and a strong connection to the land, we are dedicated to supporting the well-being, self-sufficiency, and cultural vitality of our community members. Through governance, economic development, education, and sustainable land stewardship, the Nicomen Indian Band is committed to building a thriving future for current and future generations.

Your Role in our Journey
We’re excited to welcome a Finance Manager to our team—a leadership role that is essential to the financial health of our Nation. This full time on site role, reports to the Band Manager. In this role you’ll be the go-to person for all things finance, overseeing our accounting operations, budgeting, payroll, reporting, and compliance. You’ll also support important community initiatives by providing financial insights, collaborating with internal teams, and working alongside funders and partners.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a finance professional who brings both technical expertise and a deep respect for Indigenous communities. If you’re passionate about building strong financial systems and supporting self-determination through sound financial management, we’d love to hear from you.

What You Will Do
· Partner with the Band Manager to build and roll out the annual financial plan that supports our strategic goals.

· Lead the charge on all core finance functions—from accounts payable/receivable to payroll processing, general ledger entries, and bank reconciliations.

· Manage year-end audits like a pro: reconciling accounts, preparing reports, and answering questions with confidence.

· Guide the annual budget process, working closely with department leads to create and monitor budgets, flagging any potential issues before they become challenges.

· Ensure our financial policies and procedures are not only followed but clearly communicated and continuously improved.

· Support the development of funding proposals and ensure all financial reporting is accurate, timely, and aligned with funding requirements.

· Prepare and deliver clear, insightful financial reports to support decision-making by leadership and Council.

· Make sure our financial operations comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards, including GAAP, FAL, and PSAS.

· Help strengthen internal controls, improve efficiencies, and identify ways we can continue to grow responsibly.

· Provide advisory support for community projects, ensuring funding is used strategically and transparently.

· Maintain accurate asset records and lead data collection efforts to inform budget planning and long-term replacement needs.

· Model leadership in financial integrity, privacy, and compliance, supporting a culture of accountability and excellence.

What you bring
· A deep appreciation for Indigenous culture, language, and traditions—and a strong desire to support and uplift our community.

· Certificate or Diploma in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field (equivalent post-secondary education will also be considered).

· 2–5 years of hands-on experience in accounting, payroll, budgeting, and full-cycle financial management.

· Experience developing financial policies, strategic plans, and internal controls.

· Familiarity with year-end audits, legal and regulatory compliance, and financial reporting for funders or government agencies.

· Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and accounting software such as Sage 50, QuickBooks, or PayWorks.

· Knowledge of GAAP, FAL, and Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS).

· A strong ability to build respectful and collaborative relationships—with colleagues, community members, funders, and auditors alike.

· A thoughtful approach to leadership and problem-solving, using tact, good judgment, and confidentiality when handling sensitive issues.

· A sharp eye for detail and accuracy in all areas of financial management, from recordkeeping to reporting.

· Comfort working independently and taking initiative, while also being a trusted team player who others can count on.

· A passion for supporting Indigenous self-governance and community empowerment through strong financial systems.

What We Offer:
Nicomen Indian Band will provide you with purpose in your work. As part of our team, you will contribute to the betterment of our community. We value inclusivity, support, and care which foster a positive work environment. Along with the opportunity to work alongside a compassionate like-minded team, we provide a generous compensation package which includes:

· An hourly wage of $34.00 – $36.00 per hour

· 3 weeks vacation to start

· 10 days of paid cultural leave
