Job summary

Orica invites applications for a Field Technician in Fort St. John, BC, within our Digital Solutions team. You will monitor a new dam structure by maintaining, troubleshooting, and collecting data from geotechnical instruments.

This fly-in/fly-out role operates on a 15 days on/12 hour days schedule with 6 days off, with travel and housing provided. You will work with Piezometers, Extensometers, Inclinometers, SAAs, and more, reporting to Project Manager/Engineer.

Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in Electronic, Electrical, or Mechanical Technology or a related technical field.
• Instrumentation Engineering Technology or electrical technologist experience with proven instrumentation experience.
• Eligible to register with ASTTBC preferred.
• Geotechnical site investigations familiarity is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Collect manual and automated instrumentation readings and perform data checks.
• Assist with installation, testing, calibration, commissioning and maintenance of geotechnical instruments and ADAS/MIMS.
• Maintain and calibrate equipment.
• Handle instrumentation types such as piezometers, extensometers, inclinometers, SAAs, settlement cells, and sensors.
• Support documentation including installation reports and commissioning records.
• Submit data in customer GIS compliant formats.
• Follow installation procedures and execution plans.
• Assist with commissioning/repair/decommissioning activities.
• Collaborate with Project Manager/Engineer & Supervisor.
• Adhere to safety protocols.

About The Role - Fly In, Fly Out - Field Technician (Fort St. John, BC)

We are excited to announce a new opportunity for a Field Technician in Fort St. John, BC within our Digital Solutions team. You'll play a crucial role in monitoring a new dam structure by maintaining, troubleshooting, and collecting data from geotechnical instruments. Gain valuable hands-on experience in a dynamic field environment! We are seeking technical candidates with proven instrumentation experience.

WORK SCHEDULE: This is a fly-in/fly-out position on a rotation schedule 15 days on shift with12 hour days (fly in /fly out) / 6 days off. This work schedule may change in the coming months to 15 days on/ 15 days off.

LOGISTICS: Travel provided from British Columbia and Alberta. Travel and accommodations are provided.

What you will be doing

• Collect manual and automated instrumentation readings, conduct data checks, reductions, and analysis.
• Assist with the installation, testing, calibration, commissioning, repair and maintenance of geotechnical instruments and the permanent automated data acquisition system (ADAS) including the MIMS.
• Maintain, calibrate and use all equipment related to the above tasks.
• Types of instruments include:
  • Piezometers (vibrating wire, pneumatic and standpipe)
  • Extensometers
  • Inclinometers
  • ShapeAccelArrays (SAAs)
  • Settlement cells/plates
  • Flumes, flow meters
  • Survey markers/monuments
  • Temperature sensing cables
• Support documentation, including installation reports, as-built drawings and commissioning records.
• Submit data and documentation in a format that complies with the customer GIS Standard.
• Follow and contribute to installation procedures and execution plans.
• Assist the commissioning/repair/decommissioning and other related activities of geotechnical instrumentation.
• Collaborate with Project Manager/Engineer & Supervisor.
• Adhere to strict safety protocols.

What you will bring

• Diploma or degree in Electronic, Electrical, or Mechanical Technology, or a relevant technical field.
• Instrumentation Engineering Technology or electrical technologist experience with proven instrumentation experience
• Eligible to register with ASTTBC (Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of British Columbia) preferred. https://asttbc.org
• Familiarity with geotechnical site investigations (preferred).
• Strong safety commitment.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Organized, detail-oriented, strong work ethic, problem-solver.
• Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean record.
• Willing to work in a remote location on a rotational basis.
• Able to work outdoors for extended periods in extreme weather.

Role dimensions

• All employees working at Site-C must adhere to the drug and alcohol policy and successfully pass drug & alcohol testing prior to employment.
• Work outdoors in various weather conditions (-40°C to +40°C).

Compensation Range

• Salary Range: $60,000 - 70,000 CAD plus additional hourly field pay, paid transportation and housing
• Eligible for annual short-term incentive plan
