DutiesNatural Resources Canada (NRCan) has responsibility to continuously monitor, investigate, and report on natural hazards such as earthquakes and space weather events that occur in Canada and operates seismic, geodetic, and space weather monitoring stations across Canada in this capacity. The findings and alerts contribute to the safety of Canadians and critical infrastructure operations.NRCan, through the Canadian Hazards Information Service (CHIS), is looking to support operation of these monitoring stations by adding members to an existing national-scale Field Operations team. This role encompasses a wide range of tasks including the design, construction, and operation of electronic equipment and geophysical monitoring instruments at remote stations throughout Canada, including the northernmost regions, as well as overseas. Main responsibilities will include station maintenance, remotely monitoring the transmission of data from the stations to CHIS data acquisition hubs and promptly taking corrective actions to ensure operational needs are met. Diverse and multi-faceted duties provide opportunity for expanding knowledge and expertise in a wide range of subjects.

Intent of the process
This is an anticipatory process to address future needs in Ottawa, ON, Yellowknife, NWT and/or Sidney, BC.A pool of (fully or partially qualified) candidates will be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures, language requirements/ profile(s), security requirements, conditions of employment and for various locations.

• Willing and able to do field work in remote locations (including extreme North in Canada), for up to 4 months a year in durations up to 5 weeks.
• Willing and able to drive field vehicles (including trucks, snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles).
• Willing and able to travel via helicopter, boat and small aircraft.
• Willing and able to work in confined spaces and on 10m high towers.
• Willing to work overtime as required for operations such as during field work and on weekends.
• Willing and able to lift and carry heavy objects up to 32kg, such as car batteries, over variable terrain.
• Valid driver’s license (Class 5 or Class G equivalent).
• Medical certificate (arranged by Natural Resources Canada at the time of hire).
• Must be willing and able to relocate to the position location.

Operational Requirements

• Valid First Aid and CPR.
• Valid Safety training.

• Completion of an acceptable training program in electronics technology or the employer-approved alternative. The employer-approved alternative is as follows: An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.Note: Normally, an acceptable training program in electronics technology involves the completion of two to three years of post-secondary study in this subject.
• Minimum three (3) years experience within the last five (5) years working as an electronic technologist or technician. Operation and maintenance of advanced analog and digital test and measurement devices (such as spectrum analyzer, digital signal generator, VSAT measuring devices, or other engineering test equipment).
• Design, development and repair of electronic equipment, such as working prototypes, monitoring instruments communication devices and power supplies including AC and photovoltaic.
• Experience planning, coordinating, organizing logistics, and documenting activities required to support field operations and activities.
• Experience performing hands-on manual work, including the safe use of hand and power tools for construction or maintenance building projects.

Applied / assessed at a later date

• Knowledge of the theories and techniques of electronic circuitry, high-precision analog circuitry and systems.
• Knowledge of software tools such as spreadsheets, ticketing systems and inventory systems.
• Knowledge of computer networking and data telemetry via mobile, ethernet, satellite and radio.
• Knowledge of power supplies, such as AC to DC, DC to AC, photovoltaic.
• Ability to troubleshoot, repair and improve electronic equipment and systems.
• Ability to manage and conduct complex tasks under time pressure, emergency or rapidly evolving conditions.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Language requirements (essential for the job)
