Job description

Our client seeks an Accountant to set up and manage the personal finances of a high net-worth family in midtown Toronto. From an accounting perspective, it entails a volume of expenses, cash flow management and projections, general ledger accounting, and related reporting for the individuals’ lifestyle and daily expenditures.

This role will be based out of a Forest Hill residence three days a week with two days working from home. You will work primarily independently and are encouraged to continuously find ways to innovate and implement process improvements, with opportunities to collaborate with others from the Employer’s operating company and contribute to broader strategic goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily accounting activities including wire transfers. Tracking of payments and receivables between various accounts and entities.
  • Track eligible family members’ expenses in QuickBooks (or similar software) to be allocated under the Family Trust and records maintained for tax purposes.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, and annual budgets and perform variance analysis to support strategic decision-making and cash flow requirements.
  • Coordinate and process payments of other employees, including, nannies and assistants.
  • Cash flow management and projections for monthly and yearly requirements.
  • Ensure Household and family member’s and household bill payments are made in a timely manner.
  • Oversee accounts payable across multiple properties, vehicles, and travel.
  • Maintain and organize invoices and documents both physically and digitally where most appropriate.
  • Set up and initiate a new account in QuickBooks with all accounts, payroll, payables and receivables.
  • Assist with managing service providers and reviewing terms and payments.
  • Prepare reports upon request and supporting schedules for internal and external use.
  • Perform bank reconciliations and working capital analysis, supporting the family’s financial health.
  • Collaborate with external tax consultants, and wealth managers to ensure accuracy in the preparation of annual tax returns and assist with transaction management.
  • Streamline accounting processes and contribute to process improvements across the family’s personal finances, optimizing operations beyond typical accounting functions.

Qualifications:

  • A foundation in accounting with 7+ years of experience, preferably in a family office or a public accounting firm with exposure to HNW families.
  • Hands on experience with a volume of expenses and cashflow management.
  • Strong business acumen with a proactive mindset and the ability to think critically and solve problems.
  • Highly proactive with excellent response times.
  • A keen interest in growing your knowledge and skill set beyond traditional accounting.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments.
  • High proficiency with MS Office and QuickBooks.
  • Must maintain a high degree of discretion and confidentiality at all times.
