The Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT) delivers a unique and diverse range of services that safeguard the legal, personal and financial interests of private individuals and estates.

About the job

As part of the Investment and Asset Accounting team, you will perform investment and financial accounting, analysis and reporting for the Corporation and its trust clients. Each day will be a little different, but you can expect to :

  • work with financial institutions to buy and sell investments for trust clients based upon recommendations from financial planners
  • process daily transactions for investments, income, other assets and liabilities
  • search the internet for historical prices
  • interact with financial planners, financial institutions, custodians and internal staff

What you bring to the team

Specialized knowledge and skills

You have knowledge of :

  • all types of securities (including stocks, bonds, GICs, and mutual funds) and differences between registered and non-registered investments
  • the investment field and understanding of back office processes for investment management / brokerage firms to negotiate with financial institutions, custodians and transfer agents

You have the ability to :

  • research historical information, including corporate actions to calculate historical cost, analyze complex brokerage statements, reconcile monthly account activity, and prepare required investment adjustments

Accounting, finance and auditing knowledge

You have knowledge of :

  • financial, investment, and trust accounting, general accounting principles and practices, auditing, and related business fields
  • principles and practices of accounting and financial controls
  • financial reporting, forecasting and budgeting
  • the audit cycle, including planning, providing information and documentation and responding to auditor queries

Analytical and conceptual skills

  • anticipate and resolve complex problems
  • interpret and apply relevant legislation
  • apply information analysis and reconciliation techniques, leveraging strong research skills to gather and interpret data effectively
  • use mathematical and quantitative methods to accurately calculate historical costs

Communication and technology skills

  • negotiate with the financial community to resolve financial and administrative issues
  • explain or report complex investment information and issues verbally and in writing
  • effectively use PC-based networked computer systems, databases, spreadsheets, word processing, as well as financial, investment and custodial software applications as they relate to investments, accounting, analysis and reporting activities
  • research corporate action information and search for historical cost information and market prices
