British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is seeking a part-time Faculty member for the 3D Modeling, Art and Animation program. The role focuses on Lighting and Rendering 3, delivering course materials and guiding students toward portfolio-ready renders.

You will teach in a diploma program, assess student performance, and collaborate with colleagues to uphold industry-aligned curriculum while supporting student success in a flexible, part-time capacity.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Degree in 3D Animation, Game Art, Visual Effects, Computer Graphics, or related discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of professional experience in lighting, rendering, environment art, or technical art in games/animation/VFX.
• Expertise in real-time rendering workflows using Unreal Engine (lighting, camera setup, environment presentation).
• Knowledge of real-time lighting (pre-computed and run-time) and materials/shaders creation with adjustable parameters.
• Experience with post-processing tools, post-process volumes, and cinematic effects for real-time renders.
• Familiarity with environment lighting techniques (HDRI, sky lighting, atmospheric effects).
• Ability to guide students in portfolio-quality real-time renders for demos.

Position Summary

BCIT’s School of Business + Media is seeking a temporary, part‑time (0.2 FTE ) Faculty, 3D Modeling, Art and Animation. We are seeking individuals who are highly qualified, enthusiastic, committed to quality and innovation in meeting our students’ needs, and who value the importance of teamwork in the workplace.

• MDAA 3542 Lighting and Rendering 3 (20%)

Real time rendering is used across many different industries. In this course, students will examine in depth the capabilities, limitations, and advantages of rendering in a real‑time renderer. Students will set up cameras and learn to animate their cameras for effectively showing off models and environments. Lighting will be explored for both pre‑computed lighting and run‑time lighting. Materials will be created with parameters exposed for quickly iterating on different looks for the surface. Finally, post process volumes will be used to achieve cinema quality renders.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will deliver high‑quality instruction within the 3D Modeling, Art and Animation diploma program. Responsibilities include preparing and delivering course materials; assessing and evaluating student performance; providing mentorship, feedback, and academic support; maintaining course records; fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment; and ensuring curriculum delivery reflects current industry standards and practices. Instructors are expected to collaborate with colleagues, contribute to program quality and continuous improvement initiatives, and support student success through professional, effective, and student‑centered teaching.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Required Qualifications:

• Diploma or Degree in 3D Animation, Game Art, Visual Effects, Computer Graphics, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional industry experience.
• Minimum 5 years of professional experience in lighting, rendering, environment art, or technical art within the game development, animation, or visual effects industry.
• Demonstrated expertise in real‑time rendering workflows using Unreal Engine, including scene lighting, camera setup, and environment presentation.
• Strong understanding of real‑time lighting techniques, including both pre‑computed lighting and run‑time lighting systems.
• Experience creating materials and shaders in node‑based material editors, including adjustable parameters for iterative look development.
• Experience working with post‑processing tools, including post‑process volumes and cinematic effects used to enhance real‑time renders.
• Familiarity with environment lighting techniques, including sky lighting, atmospheric effects, fog, volumetrics, and HDRI lighting setups.
• Experience creating cinematic camera setups and camera animation to showcase models and environments effectively.
• Experience working with real‑time particle systems, such as Niagara or equivalent systems used to simulate environmental effects.
• Familiarity with real‑time rendering optimization techniques, including performance considerations and balancing visual quality with runtime constraints.
• Ability to guide students in developing portfolio‑quality real‑time renders suitable for demo reels and professional presentation.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support students from a range of skill levels.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous post‑secondary teaching or mentoring experience.
• Demonstrated industry success with appropriate and current experience and skills in the entire 3D pipeline including 3D Modeling, Animating, Rigging, Texturing, Lighting, and Rendering.
• Experience in Redshift, Arnold, and Unreal Engine.

Salary Range: $69,006 - $120,460 per annum.

Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
