Job summary

The Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) seeks a Facilities & Safety Coordinator to advocate for health, safety and security across SIIT locations, developing programs and training to create a safe, compliant environment aligned with the institute's mandate.

You will lead health and safety programs, audits and education initiatives, support emergency preparedness, and collaborate with committees while overseeing facilities operations and security.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or certification in OH&S, environment or emergency response with 3+ years of health and safety program management experience.
  • Preference for candidates with building maintenance experience at multiple facilities.
  • Education and experience may be combined to meet requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance on health, safety and security policies, procedures and training to SIIT locations.
  • Lead safety programs, audits and incident prevention activities to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with OHS committees and stakeholders to promote best practices and education.
  • Oversee facilities operations, maintenance, security and emergency response readiness across sites.

Job description

Established in 1976 the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) is a First Nation governed post-secondary institution. Recognized under provincial legislation, the Institute has been conferred authority to grant certificates and diplomas. Nature and Scope

The Facilities & Safety Coordinator plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for health, safety and security and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment. In addition to focusing on safety, the position also involves activities related to facilities management and building maintenance. This position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission, and mandate.

General Accountability

The incumbent is responsible for providing advice, guidance and support in all aspects of health, safety and security, including the development and implementation of policies, procedures and guides and assists in the education and training of employees. The Coordinator focuses on facility operations that mitigate risk and ensure the safety and security of SIIT's students, clients, employees, visitors and assets.

Specific Accountabilities

The Coordinator will provide support and leadership to all SIIT locations through implementation of health and safety programs, procedures, and education initiatives focused on compliance assurance, incident reduction, and risk mitigation. The incumbent will address issues and concerns, respond to technical inquiries, promote best practices in health and safety, and work with employees to meet applicable legislative requirements. The Coordinator is an active member of the Security Threat Assessment Team (STAT). This position includes the following accountabilities:

Health & Safety
  • Recommend, implement, and evaluate workplace injury prevention plans or programs based on workplace health risks and occupational hazards that are identified through workplace injury history, trends and root cause analysis
  • Perform health and safety audits and assessments as required to support managers and ensure that employee safety training is up to date and legislative compliance maintained
  • Participation with SIIT OHS Committees & other working groups as required
Administration & Maintenance
  • Oversee Workers Compensation (WCB) process, including coordination with applicable departments; this includes, necessary reporting and supporting return to work plans
  • Direct and ensure appropriate and timely response to stakeholders regarding reactive or proactive intervention regarding security issues and/or threats, as well as actively respond to emergency or disaster scenarios
  • Repair or replace facility equipment and components by having a broad knowledge of building materials and the ability to correctly and safety operate a variety of tools
Security & Compliance
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements and legislation for emergency procedures, security, occupational health and safety.
  • Lead and collaborate with other facilities department staff in the development and maintenance of security programs, processes, and procedures as required ensuring their ongoing effectiveness and consistent application within SIIT
  • Assure security/safety programs adequately address ongoing operational emergency preparedness needs and adequately address and provide input for the development and maintenance of programs and initiatives to address the identified needs and to mitigate risks
People Management
  • Ensure a positive, diverse and inclusive work and learning environment
  • Assist in building the department through employee, contractor and service provider selection
Required Qualifications And Experience

A diploma or certification related to occupational health and safety, environment or emergency response combined with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in health and safety program management. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience completing building maintenance at multiple facilities. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Knowledge of Saskatchewan occupational health and safety legislation
  • A reliable vehicle and valid driver's license, as travel is required
  • Flexibility in your schedule to accommodate or respond to emergency situations as needed

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
  • Firemen's Certificate and trades related training
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture and organizations
  • Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA) level 1 and 2 certification

As this position is considered safety sensitive, the incumbent will be subject to testing as per SIIT's Alcohol and Substances policy.
