Job summary

The Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) is seeking a Forestry Equipment Operator Instructor to teach students the safe operation of forestry equipment and promote a positive learning environment. Job description

Established in 1976, the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) is a First Nation governed post-secondary institution. Recognized under provincial legislation, the Institute has been conferred authority to grant certificates and diplomas. Nature and Scope

Instructors report directly to their applicable coordinator and are located across the province of Saskatchewan in various educational settings. The incumbent instructs SIIT students in the classroom, laboratory or shop environments and assists during consultation hours. General Accountability

As the educational leader in the classroom, instructors will be responsible for delivering SIIT programs and curricula with the purpose of promoting student success. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, instructors will demonstrate a strong commitment to create and maintain a creative and positive learning environment at SIIT.

Specific Accountabilities

Instructors are required to keep current with developments in their subject area, instructional resources and methods, and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities to suit the individual needs of their students. The incumbent will be required to organize the curriculum to create a learning environment that guides and promotes student success. SIIT Forestry Equipment Operator program provides training in the safe operation of mechanized forestry equipment, routine maintenance of machinery and skill development in the basic operations of processing, bunching, delimbing, skidding and other forestry equipment operations. The program will concentrate on hands‑on skill development with much of the program spent in the field and on the machines. These include the following broad areas of accountability:

Instruction and Administration
  • Deliver course related material on Safety Training, Operator Fundamentals, Skidder Operation, Feller Buncher Operation, Processor Operation
  • Complete all course-related materials including attendance records and course evaluations
  • Maintain program equipment, shop facilities and materials to ensure a safe and organized work environment
  • Incorporate current technology advancements within all aspects of instruction and administration
  • Use appropriate methods of instruction, modeling, coaching, etc. to facilitate student learning
  • Use appropriate methods of evaluating and recording student progress within set time frames
  • Seek professional development opportunities to keep current and relevant in applicable teaching areas, educational standards, industry trends, and best practices
Student Success
  • Under the direction of the Coordinator, organize, supervise and/or monitor work practicum experiences
  • Make recommendations to modify course objectives, course outlines, curriculum and evaluation procedures
Relationship Management & Leadership
  • Adhere to and promote academic regulations and SIIT policies and procedures
  • Attend and positively contribute during staff, department, and institute meetings
  • Foster a positive, collaborative and professional working relationship among students, coworkers and partners across the institution
  • Develop and maintain respectful relations through the use of problem solving and constructive resolution of student issues
  • Maintain classroom, shop and laboratory discipline and, if necessary, recommend action to applicable supervisor regarding student behavior, including formal student disciplinary action
  • Ensure a positive, diverse and inclusive work and learning environment
Required Qualifications and Experience

Extensive knowledge and work experience in forestry heavy equipment operation with experience operating the following equipment: skidder, feller buncher, processor. First Aid and CPR certification are considered an asset. For success in this position, a genuine commitment to help students learn and succeed is required. Prior teaching experience would be preferred. Knowledge of First Nations culture and organizations is an asset. An understanding of adult learning theories and principles is considered an asset.

As this position is considered safety sensitive, the incumbent will be subject to testing as per SIIT's Alcohol and Substances policy.
