Job description

Summit Heights Retirement Residence is now accepting applications for an Executive Chef to join our team. Located in Hamilton, Ontario.

Job Summary:

The Executive Chef oversees all kitchen operations, including menu creation, food preparation, and staff management, ensuring the highest standards of food quality, presentation, and hygiene. This role is crucial in defining and delivering high-quality food with a hands-on approach as needed, maintaining a professional, safe, and efficient kitchen environment to satisfy and exceed residence expectations. It is an exceptional opportunity for a culinary professional with extensive knowledge, practical experience, and leadership abilities to guide a talented team, and a genuine enjoyment of interacting with our residence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Communicates with team members about menu needs, therapeutic diets, events, and other important information.
  • Conducts walk-through of kitchen to assess cleanliness, stock and production status; determines production needs, and ingredient supply.
  • Ensures proper safety and sanitation procedures are upheld by all team members.
  • Assists in kitchen hiring, routine written performance appraisals, discipline, and terminations.
  • Teaches culinary skills and proper technique, trains and supervises team members on all kitchen procedures; teaches and coaches while correcting team members.
  • Operates and maintains the working order of all kitchen equipment.
  • Meets with residents and families to discuss dietary habits, review suggestions, and resolve any concerns.
  • Communicates and maintains a good working relationship with all departments.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Red Seal preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of Culinary Management experience.
  • Strong knowledge and attention to detail on kitchen operations, with ability to multi-task and work well under pressure.
  • Experience working in a long-term and/or retirement facility.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrates exceptional energy and stamina; upholds the highest quality standards for food, service management, and kitchen operations.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, as might sometimes be required.
