Job summary

AFL in Calgary, Alberta is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to support construction sites across locations. You will read construction plans, operate heavy equipment, perform inspections and coordinate with foremen to keep projects on track.

Requirements include 1+ year of construction experience and a valid driver’s abstract. A loaded-trailer driving skill is an asset. Shift work and travel are expected; AFL offers a comprehensive Total Rewards program and growth opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Read / understand construction plans
  • Operate heavy equipment at construction sites safely and efficiently
  • Maintain and secure equipment per AFL policies
  • Perform pre-shift inspections and change attachments as needed
  • Report mechanical or safety issues per procedures
  • Communicate proactively with foreman and crew
  • Complete required paperwork and site documentation
  • Operate backhoes, track-hoe, skid steers and similar equipment
  • Support other site duties as required
  • Ensure a safe work environment for all on site
  • Represent AFL in a professional manner
  • Adhere to environmental and health & safety policies

Responsibilities
  • Able to read / understand construction plans
  • Responsible for operating heavy equipment at construction sites in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life.
  • Clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed by AFL policies and procedures.
  • Perform pre-shift inspections, change attachments, lubricate, and refill equipment while performing other site duties as assigned.
  • Properly reports any mechanical or safety problems with the equipment in accordance with company procedures.
  • Proactively communicate with foreman, superintendent and coworkers.
  • Complete required paperwork, reporting, and other documentation as required.
  • Heavy equipment operated at AFL include, but are not limited to, backhoes, track-hoe, skid steers, etc.
  • Perform other site duties or functions, consistent with status or vocational ability as may be required from time to time.
  • Ensure a safe work environment for our people, clients, subcontractors, and the public.
  • Represent AFL to the public in a manner that is consistent with corporate values and goals.
  • Lead by example.
  • Adhere to and promotes the environmental, health & safety policies of AFL.
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.

Qualifications
  • 1+ year of construction experience
  • Experience in Utility Construction - ASSET
  • Ability to understand and work with Utility locates.
  • Capable of working in all temperatures and climates and in confined spaces
  • Ability to travel to various site-based projects if required
  • Proficiency in driving with a loaded trailer an asset.
Working Conditions
  • Physically demanding workload
  • Work location: Work in locations that preclude the ability to return home
  • Work hours: Shift work (Weekend work is part of shift rotation)
  • Traveling is required
Minimum Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Clean driver’s abstract.
  • Previous Telecommunication/ OSP experience is an asset
