Job description

GFL Environmental is looking for a Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team in Abbotsford, BC!

Job Summary

Safely operate and/or have the ability to operate various equipment including forklift, bobcat, backhoe, track hoe, compactor, and/or steer equipment to bale, load, and move waste material.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Operate necessary equipment to bale and load waste material into trailers.
  2. Perform inspection and maintenance checks of equipment daily.
  3. Grease/lubricate equipment, check and add fluids to equipment daily.
  4. Operate equipment at the assigned site using steering wheels, shifters, levers, buttons, and pedals.
  5. Substitute for another operator if someone is absent or as needed.
  6. Clean trash from tracks of heavy equipment daily or as needed.
  7. Use two-way radio to communicate with co-workers regarding work activities and priorities.
  8. Conform to all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
  9. Maintain the appearance of the grounds and facility.
  10. Attend safety and branch meetings.
  11. Perform other duties as required by management.
Requirements
  1. High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
  2. Completion of forklift certification.
  3. Ability to obtain Transfer Station / Landfill Operations Certification if needed.
  4. Experience operating excavator, forklift/bobcat, front-loader, baler, backhoe, track hoe, bulldozer, and/or steer equipment.
  5. Safety shoes and eye protection.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  1. Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
  2. Apply common sense to solve problems involving multiple variables.
  3. Perform basic math and understand equipment gauges.
  4. Proficient in English (reading, speaking, understanding, and writing).
  5. Frequently lift/push/pull up to 25 pounds; occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  6. Work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Physical and Mental Demands
  1. Ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, and balance.
  2. Visual requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
  3. Lift/push/pull up to 25 pounds frequently; up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Working Conditions
  1. Exposed to loud noise, humidity, weather, moving parts, vibration, chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
  2. Work environment is typically moderate to loud.
  3. Work outdoors in heavy equipment covered cabs, exposed to all weather conditions except lightning storms.
  4. Occasionally work at heights in high precarious places.
