Equipment Operator

Equipment Operators are cross-trained to safely operate multiple pieces of equipment at recycling and waste centers. They are required to operate all necessary equipment as directed by Supervisors, including front wheel loaders, excavators, track dozers, compactors, and forklifts. These duties are performed daily in a noisy environment and in all weather conditions. Transfer stations are open 363 days per year (closed on Christmas and New Year’s). Applicants must be willing and able to commute between different sites, including Central Surrey, United Boulevard, and North Shore, as needed.

Schedule: Night shift 5:00 pm to 1:30 am

What will you do?

  • Operate equipment to move and load solid waste and recyclable materials into transportation containers.
  • Check and ensure equipment is serviced and in good working condition.
  • Perform daily safety inspections and follow safety practices and regulations.
  • Screen solid waste materials and remove unauthorized materials according to operational procedures.
  • Assist with directing traffic and guiding vehicles for proper unloading.
  • Assist with manual tasks such as cleaning waste loading and unloading areas.
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness at the end of shifts.
  • Keep records of inspections and maintenance activities.
  • Assist customers and the public by answering questions as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What will you bring?

  • Grade 12 or GED equivalent is a benefit.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license is mandatory.
  • Experience operating wheel loaders, excavators, dozers, compactors, and forklifts is required.
  • Experience working in a transfer station is an asset.
  • Knowledge of OFA and WHMIS is preferred.
  • Equipment and TDG certifications are preferred.
