Job description

Equine Hospital Veterinarian
Full-time | 4-on/4-off rotation | Hospital, urgent care, foaling & neonatal medicine
Westhills Equine Veterinary Services | Parkland County, Alberta

Practice exceptional equine medicine - with the support and balance to do it well.

Westhills Equine Veterinary Services is seeking an Equine Hospital Veterinarian to join our growing team.

This is an opportunity to practice high-quality equine hospital medicine in a role intentionally designed for both clinical excellence and career sustainability. Working alongside a hospital team, you'll provide medical leadership for hospitalized, urgent care, foaling, and neonatal patients while enjoying the continuity, collaboration, and work-life balance that come from a thoughtfully structured hospital model.

If you're a veterinarian who enjoys hospital medicine, critical thinking, collaboration, and building lasting client relationships, we'd love to hear from you.

Why Westhills?

Our goal is to make exceptional equine care sustainable - for horses, for the people who love them, and for the people who provide it.

Westhills is a comprehensive equine reproduction and wellness centre serving horses and their owners through advanced reproductive medicine, foaling and neonatal care, sports medicine, preventive care, hospital medicine, and client-only urgent care. We've intentionally designed our hospital around clear clinical ownership, dependable technical support, and predictable scheduling so exceptional medicine doesn't depend on people being endlessly available.

When you join Westhills EVS, you become part of a collaborative, close-knit team that values initiative, accountability, and continuous learning.

Our hospital offers:
  • State-of-the-art equine hospital facilities designed to support advanced diagnostics, hospitalization and patient care.
  • A progressive reproduction program providing exposure to advanced reproductive medicine, embryo transfer, neonatal foal care, stallion services, and high-risk pregnancy management.
  • A collaborative team of experienced veterinarians, highly utilized RVTs, and dedicated hospital support staff.
  • Clear clinical ownership with defined responsibilities and strong technical support.
  • Leadership opportunities through protocol development, mentorship, and continued growth of our hospital and urgent-care services.
  • A culture that values sustainable medicine, professional development, and genuine work-life balance.
About the Role

As our Hospital Veterinarian, you'll provide primary medical oversight for hospitalized patients, urgent-care cases, foaling mares, and neonatal foals during your scheduled block. Working within our paired Hospital DVM model, you'll collaborate closely with an experienced Hospital RVT(s) who serves as your technical partner, ensuring continuity of care while allowing you to focus on clinical decision-making.

Rather than remaining indefinitely responsible for every case, you'll work alongside an opposite-rotation Hospital Veterinarian who provides seamless continuity between rotations, allowing your scheduled time off to truly be time off.

This role offers the opportunity to build expertise in hospital medicine while helping shape protocols, patient safety systems, and the continued growth of Westhills' hospital and client-only urgent care services.

You’ll play a leading role in:

  • Hospital admissions and inpatient case management
  • Urgent and emergency case assessment and treatment
  • Foaling management and neonatal medicine
  • Diagnostic planning, treatment plans, and discharge decisions
  • Medical oversight of the Hospital RVT and technical team
  • Client communication, treatment recommendations, and estimates
  • Maintaining accurate medical records and case documentation
  • Clinical handoffs and continuity planning
  • Development of hospital protocols and patient safety initiatives
  • Collaborative case management with reproduction and ambulatory veterinarians
What We Offer

We recognize the value experienced equine veterinarians bring to our team and offer competitive compensation based on clinical experience, hospital and emergency capability, advanced skills, and leadership potential.

Starting Salary: $110,000+ annually, with compensation increasing based on experience and expertise.

Our comprehensive benefits package includes:

  • Paid ABVMA licensing, registration dues, and required professional levies
  • Continuing Education allowance with protected CE time
  • myHSA Health & Wellness Benefits
  • Annual clothing allowance
  • Employee discounts on veterinary services and products
  • Structured onboarding and mentorship
  • Opportunities to help shape hospital protocols and clinical systems

Please note that reliable transportation is required, as our clinic is not accessible by public transit.
