The City of Barrie is seeking an Environmental Risk Management and Compliance Co-op Student to support inspections, development review and notice issuance within the Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability Department.
Responsibilities include data management, report preparation, and assisting with Source Water Protection and Climate Change Adaptation initiatives. The term runs January to April 2027, 35 hours/week, with a wage of $20.04 to $27.30 per hour.

The Environmental Risk Management and Compliance team is part of the City of Barrie's Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability Department. The team works to protect the City's drinking water sources, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure, and public health through environmental monitoring, compliance, risk management, and enforcement programs. Key areas of work include source water protection, environmental investigations, spill response, groundwater and surface water monitoring, sewer use compliance, contaminated site management, and environmental review of development applications. Working alongside experienced environmental professionals, this position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands‑on field experience supporting programs that help protect and enhance Barrie's environment.
Under the general guidance of the Manager of Environmental Risk Management and Compliance, the Environmental Risk Management and Compliance Co-op Student is responsible for supporting the Risk Management Official and/or Risk Management Inspector(s) with inspections, development review, building permit review and notice issuance, as well as administrative duties. This position will support the Risk Management Official and Risk Management Inspector with the implementation and enforcement of the City of Barrie’s Source Protection Program, Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, and Drinking Water Protection Policy. Overall, this position plays an integral role in continually safeguarding and protecting the quality and quantity of the City’s drinking water to ensure that the residents and businesses of the City of Barrie can enjoy clean and safe drinking water.
