Job summary

The City of Barrie is hiring a Property Standards Officer to enforce by-laws related to property maintenance, building interiors and exteriors, and boarding of vacant properties. You will inspect and investigate properties, prepare reports, and support enforcement actions Two years of related education are required, along with OPSO certifications.

A valid Ontario G license, ability to climb stairs, and strong record-keeping are essential.

Qualifications

  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience conducting inspections of buildings to confirm compliance with regulations.
  • Experience with enforcement of regulations including appearances in court.
  • Physically able to climb stairs and ladders and walk over rough terrain.
  • Ability to read building plans with respect to structural, plumbing, heating and lot grading.
  • Excellent record-keeping skills in regulatory enforcement with ability to submit evidence in court.
  • Proficient with MS Office, Windows-based databases, and permit/inspection tracking software such as AMANDA.

Responsibilities

  • Provide investigation and enforcement services for alleged contraventions of property maintenance by-laws, including building interiors and exteriors, yards and vacant properties.
  • Conduct inspections to confirm compliance with by-laws for registrations and licensing of housing and lodging operations.
  • Assist in licensing, permits, and enforcement activities and prepare evidence for court when required.
