Job Description

The Environmental Inspector reports to the Environmental Compliance Officer and is responsible for inspecting and documenting construction activities to ensure compliance with the Environmental Management System (EMS), Environmental Management Plans, and applicable laws. Your experience and judgment are crucial in maintaining environmental performance on the project. The role involves working on active construction sites with various machinery, requiring collaboration with construction teams, office staff, and clients, along with knowledge of environmental protection measures and construction activities.

Responsibilities:
  1. Collaborate with Construction Team staff to promptly address environmental issues and ensure compliance with environmental requirements.
  2. Complete monitoring and inspection reports and upload them to the designated storage systems.
  3. Identify environmental deficiencies and recommend corrective actions to ensure compliance and mitigate impacts.
  4. Provide advice and recommendations for improving environmental practices and rectifying non-compliance issues.
  5. Investigate environmental incidents and public complaints, reporting findings and recommendations effectively.
  6. Communicate and share information with various project teams.
  7. Attend regular meetings with Environmental, Design, and Construction Teams.
  8. Support environmental third-party vendors at the project site as needed.
  9. Supervise, coordinate, and report on spills and remedial activities.
  10. Conduct environmental awareness and orientation training through toolbox talks and procedures, advising team members on compliance.
  11. Promote awareness of EMS and environmental requirements.
  12. Support occasional night or weekend work as required.
  13. Assist in developing reports such as the Monthly Environmental Report, Works Report, Groundwater & Dewatering Report, and Discharge Plans.
  14. Help prepare presentation materials for bi-weekly Environmental Work Group meetings, including presenting as needed.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Conditions:

Combination of office (20%) and field (80%) work.

Required Skills and Competencies
  • Minimum three years of experience in environmental monitoring/mitigation during transportation project construction, especially around watercourses, erosion control, spill containment, and effluent management in Ontario.
  • Certification as a Canadian Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (CAN-CISEC) or proven proficiency in inspecting and reporting on erosion and sediment control plans.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence in liaising with consultants, contractors, and government authorities.
  • Ability to prepare technical presentations and reports synthesizing various data sources clearly and logically.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, analytical, and written skills.
  • Willingness to work on construction sites in all weather conditions, with physical ability to use stairs, ladders, and navigate rough terrain.
  • Team-oriented attitude and proactive contribution to team environments.
