Aligned with our vision of “Less Risk, Better Health,” the Environmental Health Officer will:
- Manage and deliver evidence-based programs to reduce risks and improve health.
- Practice according to standards set by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors - BC Branch.
- Utilize advocacy, partnership, health education, risk management, compliance, and legal application to achieve our mission.
The role involves enforcing health legislation, conducting inspections and risk assessments, identifying environmental health hazards, reducing communicable diseases, providing education and consultation, and ensuring community development aligns with a healthy environment.
Typical duties and responsibilities:
- Provide consultation, education, enforcement, and disease prevention services, including:
- Inspecting food establishments, water systems, recreational water facilities, personal and care facilities, and other relevant sites for compliance.
- Investigating public health complaints and environmental control issues.
- Reporting, sampling, testing, and analyzing samples; collecting evidence and testifying in court.
- Responding to emergencies like epidemics or disasters, and participating in emergency planning.
- Conducting epidemiological investigations and following up on health risks.
- Assisting with licensing, reviewing plans for facilities, and evaluating development proposals for health impacts.
- Participating in local government committees and environmental health initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with health legislation through education, persuasion, and enforcement actions.
- Maintain documentation, participate in workshops, train staff and students, and manage equipment and supplies.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a health-related field.
- Certification in Public Health Inspection (Canada).
- Registration or eligibility for registration with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors - BC Branch.
- Two years of recent experience as a Public Health Inspector or equivalent.
- Valid BC Driver’s License.
