Job description

The University of Alberta Students' Union (UASU) is a not-for-profit organization that exists to serve undergraduate students at the University of Alberta. Event Technicians are responsible for ensuring that all technical aspects of events run safely, smoothly, and on schedule. A knowledge of technical systems used in support of a wide range of events is required. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to work in varying production capacities are integral to the position. Effective communication and time management skills are required. The position requires methodical attention to plans and details, with an ability to adapt to technical challenges as they arise.

The Horowitz Theatre, SU venues and Conference Centre, and U of A campus locations encompass the work areas of the Horowitz Events Centre.

Event Technicians report to the Technical Director with supervision and support from the Principal Technician.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assemble and deploy technical systems to event specific requirements and / or in consultation with clients to best meet their needs.
  • Operation of production systems, including audio, lighting, stage management and visuals / projection
  • Ensure that equipment is controlled, maintained and organized including inventory, supplies and tools.
  • Leadership and instruction of Event Technical Assistants as required.
  • Assist and advise clients to meet their technical requirements within the terms of their contract, ensuring that venue, building and campus policies, rules and safety regulations are adhered to.
  • Report and advise on client use time, problems and concerns.
  • Work in production capacities including sound, lighting, video and stage management as required.
  • Attend production and departmental meetings as required.
  • Perform other job-related duties, within the bounds of the required qualifications, as coordinated by the Technical Director, Principal Technician.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated experience and ability in the setup, interfacing and operation of audio, video and lighting systems in diverse production situations.
  • A working understanding of various event structures and roles, including performance protocols and organization.
  • Ability to maintain the organization and control of technical systems and associated inventory including documentation and reporting as required.
  • Awareness in the use of, and proper care of equipment and tools, in production and general facility maintenance, in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Two years of related post-secondary educationin technical theatre, audio-visual event production technologies or well-rounded experience in all areas of technical theatre.
  • WHIMIS, Fall-arrest, Aerial Lift and Standard C / AED-CPR First Aid Training are also preferred assets. Training may be provided
  • Capable of performing physical tasks including : lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing on ladders, working at heights and confined spaces, standing, walking or sitting for extended periods, and pushing or pulling heavy cases and set pieces.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position is subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement with CUPE Local 1368.
  • Technicians work variable shifts as mutually agreed to by the employer and the union.
  • Working indoors and outdoors throughout the year.
