Job description

CarbonRun is a fast-growing, venture-backed climate technology company developing river alkalinity enhancement (RAE) projects that improve river health while generating high-integrity, durable carbon dioxide removal.

We partner with communities, utilities, conservation groups, and governments to restore ecosystems and deliver measurable climate impact. CarbonRun has projects both currently operating and in development, alongside a pipeline of projects across Canada and globally, supported by committed offtakes and capital partners to enable execution and growth.

About the Role

CarbonRun is seeking an Environmental Field Intern to support the Technical Team in field data collection, on-site measurements, and data analysis. This role is crucial to advancing CarbonRun's understanding of water quality parameters and our mission to combat climate change.

This is a fixed-term student position running from January to April, 2027 (approximately 14 weeks).

Key Responsibilities
Field Data Collection and Sampling

Collect environmental chemistry samples (e.g., water samples) at designated field sites throughout the province, adhering to established protocols and SOPs.

Perform on-site measurements and tests to assess key water quality parameters using portable instrumentation.

Record precise details of sample collection locations (GPS coordinates), dates, times, and relevant environmental conditions.

Ensure proper collection, labeling, handling, and transportation of samples to maintain their integrity.

Equipment Management

Install, maintain, and decommission environmental monitoring equipment (e.g., sensors, data loggers) at field sites as required.

Regularly inspect equipment for proper functioning and perform basic maintenance tasks.

Troubleshoot minor equipment issues and report any significant problems to the Technical Team promptly.

Follow and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for equipment operation and maintenance to minimize data loss and ensure accuracy.

Assist in maintaining an inventory of field equipment and supplies.

Data Management and Analysis

Perform accurate and timely data entry from field measurements and sample collection logs into designated databases or spreadsheets.

Conduct quality assurance and control checks on entered data to identify and resolve any discrepancies or errors.

Assist in the preliminary analysis of collected data using software tools (e.g., spreadsheets, statistical software) under the guidance of the Technical Team.

Maintain well-organized records of data, field notes, and any observations made during field visits.

Research Support

Work collaboratively with the Science and Technical Team to support ongoing research activities related to water chemistry, freshwater acidification, carbon cycling, carbon drawdown, hydrology, and aquatic biology.

Utilize specialized equipment and instrumentation for environmental sample collection and analysis in both field and laboratory settings (with appropriate training and supervision).

Contribute to the preparation of visual aids (e.g., graphs, charts) to present preliminary data findings.

Community Engagement and Outreach

Engage with community stakeholders at field sites in a professional and informative manner, acting as a liaison for CarbonRun.

Assist with the coordination and execution of community outreach events, open houses, and educational programs to promote awareness of CarbonRun's technology and its environmental benefits.

Assist with the preparation of materials for community engagement activities.

Health & Safety

Assist in reviewing, developing, and updating Safe Work Practices (SWPs) to support the field team, ensuring alignment with current health and safety regulations and operational needs.

Conduct regular inspections of personal protective equipment (PPE), vehicles, and other field-related equipment to ensure compliance with safety standards and operational readiness.

Engineering, Construction, and Procurement (ECP)

Assist the ECP team with equipment supply and stocking of tools, consumables, etc.

Provide as-needed support with doser site preparation, development, and maintenance/servicing.

Valued Attributes

The ideal candidate is a motivated student with a background in environmental science, biology, chemistry, or a related field. They are reliable, detail-oriented, and eager to contribute to meaningful climate work in both field and team settings. Experience or coursework in water chemistry, environmental sampling, or fieldwork is an asset. Strong communication skills and a commitment to health and safety are essential.
