Job description

As a key member of GFL’s team, you will be committed to providing a healthy and safe work environment for all our team members. Working closely with both our operational and corporate teams, the EHS Specialist will ensure that safety is at the forefront for all team members at the start of all daily activities.

1. Operations Support
2. Conduct onsite inspections to evaluate safe work practices.
3. Perform internal audits of work practices and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation.
4. Perform observation behavioral assessments, assisting in recommended corrective and preventive actions.
5. Educate workers about GFL’s safety policy and procedures and essential safety standards.
6. Support external audit functions in assigned areas.
7. Maintain a culture of safety excellence through the support of GFL’s Safety Manual.
8. Assist in the investigation process and determining root causes and corrective actions with support from Regional EHS manager.
9. Review, classify, and report on injuries, property damage, and environmental events.
10. Assist with safety training, including new employee orientations.
11. Maintain a working knowledge of safety theory, current regulations, and GFL policies.
12. Generate weekly safety talks (4/year).
13. Support the EHS team in ensuring conformance with all applicable regulations, laws, orders, and company policies and directives from leadership.
14. Able to demonstrate leadership and maturity when dealing with uncertainty.
15. Guide the operations team by providing constructive support for decisions made.
16. Support operations when an employee has an occupational injury, including:

• Following notification via our incident notification process, reaching out to supervisors/managers to provide guidance in steps to take with injured employees in alignment with Disability Management.
• Supporting the sites to ensure proper documentation is completed within the required time frame.
• Supporting the Return-to-Work program in collaboration with operations and the Disability Management Team.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
