Job summary

The Eritrean Canadian Community Centre of Metropolitan Toronto is seeking an English Tutor to work 4 hours per week in a community-focused setting in Toronto. The role emphasizes helping students with homework, reading, writing, and language skills to support integration and academic success.

Qualifications

• Degree in English, language or literature from Canadian University or related discipline.
• Recent graduates welcome (within last 5 years).
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of the Ontario Educational system.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and decision-making abilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom/Google Meet, Internet and Excel.
• Experience with online learning and teaching.

Responsibilities

• Help students with homework, projects, test preparation, and presentation skills.
• Assist students with understanding key words and classroom concepts.
• Support study strategies, note-taking, and test responses.
• Guide students on academic best practices for research and writing.
• Conduct practice tests to track progress and set goals.
• Provide positive and constructive feedback to students.
• Share progress updates with parents and teachers when appropriate.
• Encourage communication between parents and schools.
• Orient parents and students about the Canadian educational system and curriculum.

Short Description

The Eritrean Canadian Community Center (ECCC) is a community center that serves the needs of the Eritrean community in the Greater Toronto Area. The ECCC strives to equip its members with the information they need to ensure their successful integration into Canadian society. The ECCC is a place of inclusion and seeks to strengthen the Eritrean community by providing services that meet the needs of our diverse clientele. Furthermore, the ECCC is working towards a future in which all of Toronto’s diverse communities can achieve optimal health, wellness, and dignity.

Qualifications

• Degree in English, language or literature from Canadian University or a related discipline
• Recently Graduated in the last 5 years
• Ability to speak and listen to Eritrean languages would be considered an asset
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Educational system
• Well-developed organizational, analytical, and decision‑making skills
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom meeting, Google Meeting, Internet, Excel, and email is essential
• Excellent knowledge and experience of online learning and teaching is vital

Key Responsibilities

• Help students with homework, projects, test preparation, presentation skills and other academic tasks
• Work with students to help them understand key words, concepts, especially those learned in the classroom
• Assist students with study strategies, note‑taking skills and approaches in answering test questions
• Guide students about academic best practices for specific subjects and assignments, including research and writing skills
• Conduct practice tests to track progress, identify areas of improvement and help set goals for better results
• Provide students with positive and constructive feedback
• Offer feedback on progress to students’ parents and teachers when appropriate
• Help and encourage parents to communicate with students’ schools
• Give orientation to parents and students about the Canadian Educational system and curriculum
