Job Number: 55842The City of Edmonton is looking for an Engineering Technologist II to join the Transportation Planning and Design section within the Infrastructure Planning & Design Branch. In this role, you will support the entire roadway design process from Concept to As-Built drawings for transportation projects, ranging from active transportation, major collectors, and arterials with scopes from paving to full reconstruction.You will collaborate closely with supervising engineers, multidisciplinary teams, and community partners to review project scopes, conduct field reviews, and prepare engineering drawings. By incorporating current Local, Provincial, and Federal standards, you will ensure designs address construction costs, infrastructure conditions, and long-term lifecycle considerations. If you are passionate about municipal infrastructure and committed to supporting vibrant, connected communities, we invite you to bring your expertise to our team.What will you do?Review project scopes and objectives with supervising engineers and coordinate with other branches, departments, and consultantsConduct site inspections to evaluate infrastructure conditions and verify utility alignmentsProvide technical design and drafting support to the Transportation Planning & Design section of the Infrastructure Planning & Design BranchPrepare concept, preliminary (development), tender, and final contract plans based on current Local, Provincial, and Federal roadway design standards for various transportation and civil infrastructure projects including: widening, rehabilitation/reconstruction, streetscape, active mode, transit improvements, and safety improvementsDetermine topographic survey needs, request field surveys, and interpret survey and utility informationEnsure design meets existing and future requirements of the branchEnsure designs consider construction cost, infrastructure condition, and future life-cycle considerationsCoordinate other design elements including streetlight, traffic signal, landscaping, and structural designsPrepare drainage design for improvements and relocationsPerform calculations and designs for horizontal and vertical roadway element alignmentsComplete quantity takeoffs and assist with cost estimates at all stages of a projectReview plan submissions (internal circulations or consultant) for conformance to approved standards and/or conceptsMaintain contact with survey and construction field personnel throughout a project's construction phase and provide additional information or assist in design changes when field conflicts ariseGuide and offer technical direction to support staff using AutoCAD and Civil3D softwareEvaluate utility circulation plans for compliance with established standards and to prevent potential design conflictsPromote a safe, healthy workplace by adhering to all Occupational Health and Safety guidelinesPerform other related duties as assignedQualifications:Completion of a two (2) year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or Engineering Design and Drafting TechnologyMinimum 5 years of related working experience with preferably progressively increasing responsibilityMust be eligible to be recognized as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) with ASETAssets:Demonstrated abilities with AutoCAD/ Civil3D, computer aided drafting software, and plan plotting set-upExperience utilizing Google Workspace appsSkills required for success:Develop design solutions using current software for simple to medium complexity rehabilitation projects, and at minimum provide options for solutions of complex design problemsKnowledge of design standards, an understanding of designing in constrained situations and of the field design process, as well as an ability to develop design options and analyze benefits and impacts for discussion of the final solution with the engineer or supervisorConsiderable knowledge of applicable bylaws, standards and regulations pertaining to workConsiderable knowledge of the engineering terminology and techniques related to the work assignedAbility to read, interpret and design advanced plans, specifications, and diagrams of a complex technical natureConstruction/field experience including survey layout and interpretation would be an assetAbility to apply current computer software to a wide variety of applications including the design, modelling, and AutoTurn softwareWork under tight timelines, and must be able to prioritize time effectively with input on work priorities from the engineer or supervisorPhysical ability to perform work outside in all types of weather and areas related to the work assignmentsDemonstrate service excellence, embracing diversity and promoting inclusivenessAlignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies (https://bit.ly/4brRrXm)Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation, and inclusionAlignment with the goals of the City PlanConditions of Employment:Compliance with City of Edmonton health and safety standards and required personal protective equipmentValid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) and ability to obtain business use auto insurance if requiredApplicants may be testedWork Environment:This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.
