Qualifications

• Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in traffic control engineering field including traffic signal operation.
• Demonstrated experience configuring and working with centralized transportation management systems.
• Strong proficiency with AutoCAD software and office productivity tools (such as Google Workspace).

| Job Description | | | | --- | --- | | Transportation Technician II up to 11 months Job Number: 56154 As a Transportation Technician II with the City of Edmonton, you will play a key role in designing and supporting the execution of our annual maintenance and operating traffic signal, traffic control device, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) programs. Operating within Technical Regulatory Services, this role focuses on generating accurate signal designs, configuring complex control systems, and maintaining critical asset data. You will perform quality assurance reviews, coordinate field work with external contractors, and troubleshoot equipment issues to keep our transportation network moving smoothly. Working both in an operational office environment and conducting field assessments, you will help optimize traffic management across the city. Your technical expertise directly contributes to network efficiency, legal compliance, and public safety for all Edmontonians. **What will you do?** * Translate functional requirements into detailed traffic control layouts, programming designs, and system databases * Design, draft, and update traffic signal and traffic control equipment assets while maintaining precise as-built records using drafting software * Perform daily system performance checks, review operational logs, and troubleshoot central transportation management system equipment faults * Coordinate, direct, and perform field checks or performance inspections alongside electrical contractors and maintenance teams * Complete administrative activities required to issue projects for the annual signals programs * Create, prepare, and maintain control device inventories, equipment timing sheets, configuration files, and backup databases * Perform peer reviews on designs and technical documentation to ensure 100% accuracy and adherence to safety standards * Draft written reports and provide clear verbal responses for legal inquiries, internal business units, and community members * Review and comment on circulating plans from other municipal departments and assist in establishing operating standards and guidelines * Perform other duties as required Qualifications : * Completed 2 Year Diploma in Electrical, Electronic, Transportation, or Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized Institute of Technology * Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in traffic control engineering field including traffic signal operation * Demonstrated experience configuring and working with centralized transportation management systems * Strong proficiency with AutoCAD software and office productivity tools (such as Google Workspace) **Assets:** * International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signals Level I & II Certification * Experience with using and administering a software application of a traffic signal control system from a known provider in the industry **Skills required for success:** * Knowledge of transportation management computer systems/ equipment, networks and wireless communication systems * Knowledge of traffic signals guidelines and specifications as outlined by TAC, ITE, NEMA and IMSA is required * In-depth knowledge of traffic control equipment operations, programming configurations, and industry standards * Ability to accurately read, interpret, and apply complex engineering standards, technical specifications, and design drawings * Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to effectively translate technical information to various audiences * Strong time-management and prioritization skills to navigate frequent operational disruptions and dynamic deadlines * Problem-solving agility to make sound, quick decisions regarding field equipment troubleshooting while adhering to safety guidelines * Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies (https://bit.ly/4brRrXm) * Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusion **Conditions of Employment:** * Compliance with required safety protocols and wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during field visits, including hard hat, safety footwear, high-visibility outerwear, and eye protection * Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent).
