Job Summary
Industrial Designer needed to contribute to the design of an unmanned guided vehicle for pipe inspection and remediation.

Organizational Status
Engineering Technician 3 reports to the professor in-charge, and is expected to work with the project collaborators, technicians and industrial partners.

Work Performed
1. Create detailed 3D models using Inventor and/or SolidWorks.
2. Collaborate with cross-functional teams and iterate designs based on feedback.
3. Apply mechanical knowledge to design the vehicle components.
4. Generate prototype(s), conduct testing, and provide design documentation for manufacturing.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Expensive, delicate scientific equipment could be damaged if not handled safely. Risk of loss of time that will delay the research project. Ultimately if multiple milestones are not met, the contract will be terminated.


Supervision Received
Will be supervised by:
• Professor in charge (primarily)
• Project collaborators
• Department technician
• Staff from the project industry partners

Supervision Given
May coordinate the work of some graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a technical college or institute or completion of a recognized apprenticeship and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

1. Relevant experience or demonstrated knowledge in industrial design, mechanical engineering, or a related field as a preferred qualification .

2. Proficiency in Inventor and/or SolidWorks, demonstrated through a strong design portfolio.

3. Previous experience working in a collaborative academic R&D environment.

4. Familiarity with pipe inspection technologies

5. Demonstrated experience designing electronic circuits for motor control is a plus
