A leading automotive company in Canada is seeking an Engineering Specialist - Tooling to manage tooling requirements and enhance manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machining, mechanical knowledge, and proven leadership skills. Responsibilities include troubleshooting tooling issues, managing engineering changes, and ensuring adherence to tooling standards. Engineering Specialist - Tooling
Determining the complete tooling requirements to produce a world class manufactured part, including costs estimates, and vendor quotations.
Procuring all required tooling and equipment.
Specifying the type and quantity of machine required for each operation, required tooling, fixtures, and gauges.
Determining the proper take time and the number of pieces per hour that can be produced.
Aiding in design of special tools, and working with responsible parties for equipment arrangement and installation.
Managing engineering changes for production parts after launch.
Ability to work effectively with hourly and salary employees as it pertains to tool life adherence, tooling preparation and tooling process adherence.
Ability to create and sustain tooling process standards.
Troubleshooting tooling issues impacting the business as they arise and implementing countermeasures to eliminate.
Providing time studies with information needed for labor cost estimates and provide planning with information regarding starting dates, changeover dates and production capacity.
Investigating customer, production suggestions/issues and working with team leaders to support production to make improvements.
Continuous quality and cost improvements utilizing Kaizen to deliver projects and other quality improvement tools (the term “tools” includes patterns, dies, jigs, fixtures, machine tools or special equipment).
Engaging in the initial phases of engineering to determine the complete machine and tooling required for complex or comprehensive operations on production parts and assemblies.
Performing general duties described for process engineers, including the completion of complex and comprehensive project.
Minimum Requirements:
Education:
Experience:
3 years of related experience in a machining manufacturing environment
3 years of mechanical knowledge. (tooling and/or related equipment)
Ability to use Auto CAD design tools.
Competence to read and interpret related design drawings.
Fluent oral and written language skills; familiarity with technical language is important.
Preferred Experience:
5+ years of previous experience in manufacturing, with experience in machining and induction and laser heating preferred.
Experience with metal cutting tooling operations (either coolant or MQL based processes) preferred.
Experience with cast iron, aluminum or steel machining operations preferred.
Background in tool making and machining, specifically machining parts for powertrain systems.
Understanding of induction hardening and heating.
Understanding of before and after of heat treat.
Excellent reasoning and problem solving ability.
Demonstrate leadership skills to direct team members.
Proficient in Microsoft Office.
Substantial mathematical ability.
