Job description

We're seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our engineering teams through the real challenges of client work: not just shipping software, but building trust, driving outcomes, and making clients genuinely successful. At Bit Complete, technical excellence is necessary but not sufficient. This role is for someone who understands that the client relationship is part of the product and who holds themselves and their team to that standard.

You'll operate in a fast-moving, high-ownership environment where context is often incomplete, priorities shift, and success depends on your ability to move quickly, make sound decisions, and close gaps without waiting for direction. The best fit for this role is someone who naturally identifies what is missing and steps in to fix it.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead, manage, and grow a high-performing team of software engineers, fostering a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, and raising the level of the people around you. Set clear expectations, give timely feedback, address performance gaps directly, and create opportunities to stretch people. This is a core expectation, not an optional extra.
  • Own technical strategy and architectural decisions across client engagements, evaluating tradeoffs between different approaches and guiding teams toward solutions that balance client outcomes, scalability, maintainability, and speed. You don't need to be the deepest technical expert in the room, but you need the judgment to make sound architectural decisions and know when to bring in deeper technical expertise.
  • Collaborate closely with partners and clients to translate their goals, constraints, and priorities into clear technical direction, bringing expertise they don't have, pushing back respectfully when needed, and never just saying yes to everything.
  • Manage project timelines, resources, and risks with a no-surprises standard. Flag issues early, communicate proactively, and ensure clients are partners in navigating uncertainty rather than recipients of it.
  • Champion engineering best practices across coding standards, AI-assisted development, code reviews, testing, observability, and operations. Help the team use modern tooling to move faster while maintaining a high bar for judgement, maintainability, and production quality.
  • Help engineers at every level understand the gap between where they are and where they're going, actively investing in closing it through coaching, feedback, and creating the right opportunities.
  • Represent Bit Complete in client settings with clarity, confidence, and consistency, translating technical decisions into business impact and building the kind of trust that compounds over time.
  • Proactively identify gaps in systems, processes, or execution and take initiative to resolve them. The question that matters is whether the client's situation improved, not just whether the work got done.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of relevant industry experience, with at least 5 years directly managing software engineers.
  • Strong technical acumen across software architecture and development, with the judgment to balance speed and quality in the service of client outcomes.
  • Proven track record leading engineering teams through complex, ambiguous environments, moving from ambiguity to high-quality execution without waiting for the path to be cleared.
  • Demonstrated high agency. You identify problems, close gaps, and drive work forward, and you know the difference between completing tasks and actually moving the needle for clients.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to bring clarity to technical decisions for non-technical audiences, leading with business impact rather than jargon.
  • Experience managing client relationships directly, including delivering difficult news early, managing scope with transparency, and building trust through consistency rather than heroics.
  • Comfort operating in environments where requirements evolve, tradeoffs are constant, and the feedback loop runs through the client as much as the codebase.
  • Experience with agile methodologies and a genuine commitment to continuous improvement, for your team and for yourself.
