Job description

On-site – Toronto, ON Full-time Posted May 1, 2026

$150,000 – $200,000 CAD + equity

About the Role

We're seeking a Technical Lead to guide one of our core engineering teams. This is a senior leadership role with significant influence over how the team works and the technical direction of the projects you own.

Approximately 70% of your time is hands-on engineering — leading critical architecture work, reviewing pull requests, pair programming on complex problems, and shipping code yourself. The remaining 30% is team leadership — running 1:1s, coaching engineers through career growth, conducting technical interviews, and collaborating with project managers and clients on scope and timeline. You won't be in meetings all day; you'll still be a working engineer with deep technical context.

You'll shape how your team works and the quality bar they hold themselves to. You'll set the standard for code review, architecture documentation, and operational rigor. You'll also represent your team externally — to clients in design reviews, to other internal teams in cross-team initiatives, and occasionally to the broader engineering community through talks or technical writing.

What You'll Do
  • Lead technical architecture for one to two major client engagements simultaneously
  • Make and document architecture decisions that balance simplicity, scalability, and delivery timeline
  • Conduct rigorous code reviews and set the quality bar for the team through your own work
  • Run weekly 1:1s with each engineer on your team, focused on growth, blockers, and career trajectory
  • Lead technical interviews — design sessions, code reviews, and final-round architecture discussions
  • Mentor engineers at all levels through pairing, code review, design feedback, and career coaching
  • Partner with project managers on scope, timeline, and resourcing decisions for your team's projects
  • Represent the team in client-facing design reviews and technical decision conversations
  • Lead post-incident reviews and drive systemic improvements to prevent recurrence
  • Contribute to our company-wide engineering principles, hiring rubrics, and onboarding materials
  • Stay technically sharp — you should still ship code regularly and pair with engineers weekly
What We're Looking For
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience with a record of shipping production systems
  • 3+ years in a technical leadership, staff engineer, or principal engineer role
  • Strong full-stack or systems engineering background — you should be able to debug anything in your team's stack
  • Demonstrated ability to design scalable, maintainable systems and explain those designs clearly
  • Track record of conducting technical interviews, calibrating hires, and growing senior engineers
  • Excellent communication — can explain technical trade-offs to clients, executives, and junior engineers alike
  • Hands-on with at least two of: backend (Node/Python/Go), frontend (React/Next.js), or systems (C++/Rust)
  • Comfortable working on-site in Toronto with periodic visits to client offices and sites
Bonus Points
  • Experience leading cross-functional engineering teams across multiple client projects
  • Open-source project maintainer experience (you've been on the receiving end of contributions)
  • Background spanning multiple tech stacks — generalist credentials across web, data, and systems
  • Public speaking, conference talks, or substantial technical writing in the public domain
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary in the $150,000 – $200,000 CAD range + equity participation
  • On-site at our Toronto office (Yonge & Lawrence) with a collaborative, in-person team culture
  • Top-tier hardware: MacBook Pro M-series, ergonomic chair & desk setup
  • Extended parental leave — 12 weeks fully paid for any caregiver + return-to-work transition support
  • Flexible hours — work when you're most productive, no mandatory meeting blocks
