Job description

Apex Aluminum is a state-of-the-art aluminum extrusion factory located in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. With a 170,000 square foot aluminum extrusion facility and some of the most modern equipment in its industry, Apex can offer custom extrusions, mill finish aluminum and anodized aluminum to satisfy the most demanding customer and all architectural needs.

As an Engineering Technologist, you will be responsible for the programming, integration, and optimization of control systems in support of automated manufacturing processes. This position requires a strong background in PLC programming, electrical troubleshooting, and the ability to interface with cross-functional teams to support production efficiency and reliability. The role reports directly to the Engineering Manager and includes the following duties and responsibilities.

Duties And Responsibilities

Control Systems Programming and Integration:

  • Design, develop, and implement PLC and HMI programs (e.g. Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or equivalent).
  • Troubleshoot and optimize control systems to ensure smooth and reliable operation of production equipment.
  • Update and document logic and control system changes.
  • Develop and support SCADA systems for plant monitoring.
  • Integrate new equipment and upgrade existing systems with minimal downtime.

Electrical And Automation Support

  • Collaborate with maintenance and production teams to resolve recurring control-related issues.
  • Perform electrical device troubleshooting.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and P&ID drawings.
  • Support the commissioning of new machinery and automation projects.
  • Assist in the design and layout of electrical panels and control systems.

Project Execution And Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in the planning and execution of engineering projects.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and automation.
  • Prepare project documentation, including risk assessments, technical reports, and user manuals.
  • Ensure all systems comply with electrical codes, safety standards, and best practices.

Communication And Collaboration

  • Work closely with production, maintenance, and engineering teams to support day-to-day operations.
  • Provide training and support to technicians and operators on new control systems.
  • Maintain clear communication with equipment vendors and contractors.
  • Attend team meetings and contribute to technical discussions and project updates.

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in PLC programming and industrial automation (preferably in a manufacturing environment).
  • Proficient in PLC programming: Allen Bradley (Rslogix 500, 5000, and Studio 5000) and Siemens (Step 7).
  • Proficient in HMI programming: Allen Bradley (Factorytalk View), Siemens (WinCC), ASEM (Premium HMI), and MaplebSystem (EBPro)
  • Proficient in VFD Programming: Allen Bradley (CCW) and Siemens (Starter)
  • Strong Modbus communication protocol troubleshooting and configuring: RTU and TCP
  • Strong understanding of industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, etc.) and field device communication.
  • Experience with SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL database
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a production environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail, documentation, and safety practices.
  • Good organizational, time management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Flexibility to work overtime or off-shifts as needed.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and remain calm and act responsibly during emergencies.
  • Driver's license and reliable vehicle required for transportation.

Schedule : Monday to Friday

Work Timings : 7:00am to 3:30pm
