Overview

Reporting to the EngineeringManager, the Engineering Designer is a technical expert responsible for the design of Air-Core Coil products (air core reactors), covering electromagnetic/electrical design and basic structural design, and coordinating with Mechanical Engineering on complex structural design and analysis. The Engineering Designer develops robust, economical, and manufacturable reactor designs that meet customer specifications and applicable standards, proactively assesses and mitigates technical risk, acts as a technical reference for the design team, and works cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, Production, and Quality throughout the product life cycle.

Your Tasks:
Electromagnetic & Electrical Design
  • Perform full electromagnetic design of air core reactors, including inductance, impedance, losses, magnetic field, and current distribution calculations.
  • Design and validate insulation systems and conduct insulation coordination in line with applicable standards and dielectric requirements.
  • Perform thermal and loss evaluations to ensure temperature rise and rating requirements are met.
  • Optimize designs for performance, cost, weight, and manufacturability.
Structural Design & Mechanical Coordination
  • Perform basic structural design of the reactor, including standard winding construction, spiders, brackets, terminals, and mounting arrangements.
  • Coordinate with Mechanical Engineering on complex structural design and analysis, including short-circuit force, seismic, wind, and vibration evaluations.
  • Develop and coordinate detailed drawings, models, and bills of material for fabrication.
  • Support prototype development and the resolution of manufacturing and field issues.
Manufacturing & Production Support
  • Actively troubleshoot manufacturing issues on the production floor, working hands-on with production staff to diagnose problems and implement timely design or process solutions — a core responsibility of the role.
  • Serve as the go-to design resource for the shop floor, resolving build, tolerance, and assembly issues that arise during fabrication of air core reactors.
  • Feed lessons learned from production back into designs, drawings, and standards to prevent recurrence and improve manufacturability.
Customer Test Coordination
  • Plan and coordinate customer routine, type, and special tests, including customer-witnessed and factory acceptance tests (FAT) for air core reactors.
  • Develop and review test plans and procedures to ensure they meet customer specifications and applicable standards.
  • Liaise between the customer, Test Lab, and Production to schedule tests and ensure units and documentation are ready.
  • Attend and technically support tests, address issues that arise during testing, and interpret and validate results.
  • Review and approve test reports and support resolution of any non-conformances identified during testing.
Technical Leadership & Cross-Functional Support
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate design, manufacturing, and test risks — conducting design risk assessments (e.g., FMEA) on new and non-standard products, ensuring appropriate design margins, and escalating risks to cost, schedule, or quality early.
  • Act as the senior technical reference for reactor design, providing guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate designers and engineers.
  • Review customer specifications and support Sales with feasibility assessments and technical solutions for complex or non-standard requirements.
  • Support Operations, Production, and Quality with design clarifications, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Contribute to design standards, guidelines, calculation tools, and design automation to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Participate in R&D and continuous improvement initiatives to advance reactor design and technology.
Requirements:
QualificationRequirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university (advanced degree an asset).
  • Minimum 3 years of design engineering experience, with substantial experience designing air core reactors or comparable high voltage / electromagnetic products.
  • Demonstrated expertise in electromagnetic/electrical design of air core reactors, with solid working knowledge of structural design.
  • Professional Engineering License (P.Eng) a plus.
SkillRequirements:
  • Deep expertise in air core reactor design, including electromagnetic, thermal, insulation, and basic structural design principles.
  • Excellent ability to develop mathematical/computer models and perform engineering calculations related to electromagnetics, thermal, and structural dynamics.
  • Excellent ability to interpret customer specifications and applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail and design quality.
  • Strong risk assessment and mitigation skills, including the ability to identify failure modes, apply appropriate design margins, and use methods such as FMEA.
  • Strong ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to other designers and engineers.
  • Excellent ability to manage parallel projects, self-prioritize, and work independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor); experience with FEM tools (e.g., ANSYS) and SAP an asset.
We offer:
