Job summary

Aecon, a leader in infrastructure development, is seeking a COE Welding Engineer to support its nuclear projects. This role involves overseeing welding initiatives, ensuring quality standards are maintained, and leveraging welding technologies for competitive advantages. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience and a strong understanding of welding processes, as well as project management skills to drive continuous improvement in the welding department.

Qualifications

Aecon Nuclear currently is undertaking efforts to replace key components at the Darlington and Bruce Power plants as a part of each respective Life Extension Program to allow operation for another 40+ years. The scope of work includes the removal and replacement of calandria tubes, pressure tubes, feeders, and steam generators as well as technical development, construction management and trade labour.

Aecon Nuclear is also currently at the forefront of the next generation of Nuclear Power in Canada by fabricating and constructing the first of a kind SMR facility in Darlington in addition to potential other new build large scale reactors among other exciting nuclear industry efforts across North America and Europe.

The COE Welding Engineer position supports the welding initiatives of the Aecon Nuclear Centre of Excellence (COE) department. This department is responsible for three basic areas critical to welding within the company :

1. Developing, administering, and maintaining the welding program at a corporate level

2. Supporting new and in process project activities

3. Performing R&D, proposal work and supporting business development / proposals initiatives

Staying at the forefront of welding technology is key to ensuring that Aecon welding activities maintain the high level of quality that is required in the nuclear industry. Additionally, ensuring that Aecon leverages the latest available technologies to remain competitive in the marketplace will provide further confidence and opportunities for future business development. The welding center of excellence is a self-managed department which operates as a dedicated body within Aecon to be able to provide internal welding services to Aecon, as well as contract services to external customers. This department is responsible to develop the methodologies and techniques to weld and execute the complex welding tasks across all of our projects by performing research and development, training, mockups, and designing and building state of the art custom welding machinery.

What You'll Do Here

Oversee technical aspects of projects and initiatives undertaken by the welding COE department, specifically with regards to welding and manufacturing

Strong focus on GTAW orbital welding for reactor piping welding and process implementation

Manage, implement, and provide technical guidance to execute procedure qualification records for ASME, CWB and / or AWS welding codes

Review and produce technical documentation in relation to welding fabrication

Assist in developing, troubleshooting, designing, testing and training with various types of welding processes and pieces of equipment.

Assist with Aecon Nuclear welding school activities and classes (theoretical and hands on)

Support of contract proposal efforts and review of customer supplied technical data

Draw or sketch manufacturing concepts to communicate methods to fabricate structural weldments

Communicate with welding wire (consumable) and welding equipment vendors to review, assess, procure and commission welding related equipment

Review code of construction and customer technical requirements to provide technically accurate direction

Manage budgets with respect to R&D budgets and production specific development efforts

Make technical presentations to executives and customers as necessary to effectively communicate technical execution, problem resolution and other discussions

Coordinate mechanical testing of PQRs, WPSs, WPQ and WMQs with local labs.

Make recommendations for continuous improvement of welding innovation at Aecon Nuclear

What You Bring To The Team

College and / or University degree in Engineering or related field, or equivalent work experience, specifically mechanical, materials, mechatronics, welding & robotics and other such technical programs with an emphasis on welding

Professional Engineering designation in the province of Ontario is an asset

Previous experience with ASME welding and fabrication codes is required (ASME IX, ASME III)

Previous experience with CWB and AWS welding codes is an asset

Minimum 2 years of industry welding, and manufacturing experience is required

Practical hands on experience with manufacturing tools and welding is an asset

Familiar with welding principles. (Basics of arc welding, types of welding etc.)

Experience with the GTAW welding process and orbital welding of piping

Familiar with robotics or comparable semi-automated and mechanized machinery is an asset

Familiar with weld development initiatives such as PQRs, WPSs, and nuclear codes of construction

Previous experience with the selection of welding consumables for fabrication

Previous experience with basic metallurgical analysis, techniques, and technical report reviews

Previous design experience with tools, fixtures and simple rigging is an asset

Able to produce solid models and 2D manufacturing drawings in Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor or an equivalent CAD package.

Intermediate to expert proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word

Organizational skills to handle multiple tasks within a high-pressure environment

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)

Ability to work effectively with all levels of management and employees

Willingness for continuous learning and advancement of technical knowledge

Detail oriented and passionate

Must possess valid G driver's license and have access to a vehicle

Takes pride in work to strive for excellence and instill this mindset onto others

A passion for welding is an asset

Have a willingness to mentor and share knowledge

Practices a strong safety culture

Must have a positive attitude to develop and test new solutions to solve a variety of technical welding issues

Ability to maintain active schedule tracking and resource management initiatives

Applied knowledge of Project Management and Project Controls principles an asset
