The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is a not‑for‑profit regulator dedicated to enhancing public safety across Ontario. As a Fuels Engineer, you’ll work with customers and colleagues to promote compliance, review submissions, and help maintain the integrity of fuel systems that communities depend on daily.

You’ll apply technical expertise to assess compliance with legislation and standards while collaborating with inspectors and industry stakeholders to support public safety

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering plus a P.Eng. designation in good standing.
• 3–5 years in a regulatory or fuel-industry setting with a strong design background.
• Knowledge of Ontario regulations, safety codes, and CSA/ASME standards.
• Experience with engineering quality management and electronic records.

Responsibilities

Your Key Contributions:

• Evaluate Compliance of Fuel Systems and Devices: Review engineering submissions, applications, technical drawings, calculations, and supporting documentation to assess compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, and adopted codes and standards.
• Support Safe Product and System Approvals : Complete technical assessments and issue approvals, variances, registrations, and other regulatory authorizations following technical review and assessment of fuel systems, appliances, and equipment.
• Provide Technical Guidance: Respond to client, industry, and stakeholder inquiriesregarding regulatory requirements, engineering standards, codes, and compliance obligations to support safe installation and operation of fuel-related equipment.
• Contribute to Incident Investigations: Collaborate with Inspectors and Investigators to assess safety incidents, determine compliance with regulatory requirements, conduct root cause analysis, and support public safety outcomes.
• Advance Compliance and Risk Mitigation: Identify and address safety concerns, including fuel appliance recalls and non-compliance matters, by communicating risks, supporting corrective actions, and promoting adherence to regulatory requirements.
• Support Continuous Improvement and Knowledge Sharing: Research emerging technologies, regulatory changes, and updates to codes and standards, while contributing to operational procedures, technical guidance documents, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
• Represent TSSA and Promote Public Safety: Participate in technical committees, industry associations, working groups, and projects to support the development of safety standards and strengthen public awareness of regulatory requirements.

Your Qualifications & Key Strengths:

• Certifications: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Electrical Engineering, Applied Science, or an equivalent qualification recognized by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), combined with a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in good standing.
• Technical Background: Bring 3 to 5 years of engineering experience within a regulatory environment, fuel industry, consulting, or related technical field, supported by a sound understanding of fuel systems and equipment design from a mechanical, chemical, and/or electrical engineering perspective. Experience with fuel oil, propane, natural gas, pipeline, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and/or Hydrogen systems is considered an asset, including familiarity with the CSAB149 series, CSA B139 series, CSA Z662 and CSA B31.1/B31.3 piping systems and associated industry practices.
• Regulatory & Industry Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of applicable Ontario regulations, safety codes, and industry standards, including CSA codes and standards, for fuel systems and pipelines; ASME standards for power piping, process piping, hydrogen piping, and pressure vessels.
• Engineering Systems & Quality Management: Apply experience working with engineering quality management systems, engineering review processes, and electronic records management practices. Experience working within engineering management, regulatory administration, or customer relationship management platforms, such as Microsoft Dynamics 365, is considered an asset.
• Engineering & Analytical Skills: Apply strong technical analysis skills to review engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, manuals, control systems, PLC programming logic, and related documentation to assess compliance and support sound engineering decisions. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate complex technical issues and identify safety risk.
• Communication & Collaboration: Utilize strong written and verbal communication skills to provide technical guidance, maintain accurate technical records, resolve complex compliance issues, and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to support public safety objectives. Demonstrate the ability to manage multiple priorities and contribute to a professional, public safety-focused environment.
