Job summary

Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is seeking an experienced inspector to help ensure safety across Ontario’s hydrocarbon fuels sector. You will conduct inspections, analyse incidents, and advise on regulatory compliance while engaging with certificate holders and industry stakeholders.

The role requires strong knowledge of fuels regulations, codes (CSA B149, Liquid Fuels Handling Code, CSA Z662) and hands-on field experience.

Qualifications

• Five years of experience in the hydrocarbon fuels industry with working knowledge of fuels regulations.
• Proficient with inspections, incident investigations, root-cause analysis and risk assessment.
• Ability to document findings and maintain compliant regulatory records in company systems.

Responsibilities

• Promote public safety through inspections of fuel facilities and regulated sites to ensure compliance.
• Respond to safety incidents, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
• Issue orders and provide guidance based on fuels regulations, codes and standards.

Your Key Contributions:

• Promote Public Health:Conduct inspections of fuel facilities, equipment and other regulated sites to confirm compliance with the Technical Standards and Safety Act and its associated regulations.
• Respond to Safety Incidents:Attend and inspect incidents involving fires, explosions, carbon monoxide exposure, and public complaints to determine root causes and recommend actions that reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
• Support Compliance Outcomes:Issue orders and provide guidance to stakeholders based on the interpretation and application of fuels regulations, codes, and standards.
• Maintain Accurate Regulatory Records:Document inspection findings, incident details, and compliance data in TSSA systems to support risk-based decision-making and accurate reporting.
• Contribute to Consistent Service Delivery:Plan and schedule daily inspection activities, prepare reports within established timelines, and support audit inspections in accordance with standardized procedures.
• Engage Industry and the Public:Provide clear, timely information to certificate holders, contractors, and members of the public to build awareness of regulatory requirements and encourage safe practices.
• Support a High-Performing Team:Share technical knowledge, participate in training activities, and collaborate with colleagues to promote a cooperative and safety-focused work environment.

Your Qualifications & Key Strengths:

Certifications in Progress:

• Actively progressing toward or currently holding relevant fuels certifications such as Gas Technician (G2), Oil Burner Technician (OBT2), Liquid Propane or Petroleum Mechanic (PMH/PM2/PM3).
• Maintain or work toward the technical endorsements needed to inspect regulated fuels equipment in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

Technical Background:

• Bring at least five years of experience in the hydrocarbon fuels industry, supported by a strong working knowledge of the Technical Standards and Safety Act and associated fuels regulations (210/01, 212/01, 213/01, 215/01, 216/01, 217/01).
• Demonstrate proficiency with fuels-related codes and standards, including CSA B149 series, the Liquid Fuels Handling Code, and CSA Z662 for oil and gas pipeline systems.
• Apply strong analytical skills when conducting inspections, completing incident investigations, determining root causes, and assessing risks within regulated environments.
• Use business systems to document findings, maintain accurate compliance records and support consistent service delivery.

Travel Requirements:

• Daily travel required; therefore, a valid Ontario Class G driver's licence and a driving record suitable for fieldwork are essential.
