Job summary

Tetra Tech is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer for our Pickering, ON office on a new 1-year contract with potential extension. The role involves conducting fire protection engineering assessments for nuclear and industrial facilities, leading FHA/FSSA efforts, and ensuring compliance with NBCC, NFCC, NFPA, and related codes.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and support regulatory submissions. The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree in a related field, a P.Eng.

Qualifications

  • P.Eng. designation in Ontario or eligible.
  • 8-15+ years of experience in nuclear, power, industrial, or regulated facilities.

Your Role:

We are currently seeking a Fire Protection Engineer for our Pickering, ON office. This posting is for a new contract (1 year extenadable) vacancy for which we are actively recruiting. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required by the position.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform fire protection engineering assessments for nuclear and industrial facilities, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, regulations, and client requirements.
  • Lead and support Fire Hazard Assessments (FHA), Fire Safe Shutdown Analyses (FSSA), code compliance reviews, and fire risk evaluations.
  • Develop alternative compliance solutions and code equivalency reports to meet fire and life safety objectives.
  • Review fire alarm, detection, suppression, sprinkler, passive fire protection, and life safety systems for compliance and performance.
  • Evaluate the fire protection impacts of design changes, including egress, combustible loading, occupancy, and emergency response considerations.
  • Conduct fire code compliance reviews for new, modified, refurbished, and life-extension projects.
  • Support regulatory reviews, nuclear licensing activities, client submissions, and resolution of AHJ comments.
  • Prepare fire engineering strategies and technical justifications for design, procurement, construction, and engineering change documentation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to resolve fire protection and life safety challenges.
  • Participate in site walkdowns, inspections, field assessments, and commissioning activities at operating facilities.
  • Contribute to proposals, project planning, technical estimates, client engagements, and mentoring of junior staff.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario, or eligibility for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario.
  • Typically, 8-15+ years of progressive fire protection engineering experience in nuclear, power generation, industrial, or other highly regulated facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing or reviewing FHA, FSSA-related inputs, CCR, fire risk assessments, fire protection impact evaluations, and code compliance documentation.
  • Strong working knowledge of NBCC, NFCC, OBC, CSA N293, CSA N393, NFPA 13, NFPA 14, NFPA 25, NFPA 72, NFPA 80, NFPA 101, CAN/ULC-S524, and applicable ULC standards.
  • Ability to assess fire hazards, combustible loading, fire scenarios, detection and alarm performance, suppression system adequacy, egress, emergency response, and firefighter access.
  • Strong technical writing, code interpretation, engineering judgement, interdisciplinary coordination, and client communication skills.
  • Experience supporting nuclear power plant studies for fire protection, fire safety, code compliance.
  • CFPS certification, post-graduate fire protection education, or experience with independent third-party fire reviews is considered an asset.
Software Skills
  • Proficiency and/or familiarity with fire protection engineering software, fire modelling tools, code compliance tools, and engineering analysis applications.
  • Experience with fire modelling tools such as CFAST and/or FDS is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and nuclear project document management systems is preferred.
Compensation:

The expected annual compensation range for this position is $95,000 to $135,000. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining compensation, including but not limited to education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.

A requirement of working for Tetra Tech is that you are at least 18 years of age and legally entitled to work in Canada. (A copy of a valid work permit may be required.)
