Job summary

Yellowhead County is seeking a 911 Dispatcher to answer calls, coordinate dispatch services and manage after-hours communications for county staff and contracted clients.

The role requires Grade 12, emergency dispatch experience, and strong computer/typing skills, with additional assets in AED/EMT certifications and driver’s license. Overtime and high-stress calls are possible in a busy environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum education of Grade 12 or equivalent.
• Post-secondary education in a related field is asset.
• IAED certification is asset.
• Emergency Telecommunications certification is asset.
• Experience in emergency dispatch or call-taking is preferred.
• Basic training in office software is preferred.
• Strong computer and typing skills.
• Understanding of radio communication systems.
• Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License.
• Defensive Driving completed.
• Valid First Aid/CPR.

Responsibilities

• Answer all 911 calls and related lines for multiple municipalities in a courteous manner.
• Gather information to determine call type and severity.
• Reroute calls to correct agencies.
• Dispatch firefighting resources based on information.
• Prioritize multiple calls to allocate resources.
• Monitor responder safety by radio.
• Dispatch additional resources as requested by incident commanders.
• Maintain logs and incident reports.
• CAD and RMS data entry.
• Complete paperwork related to call center operations.
• Ensure call center is kept clean and orderly.
• Administrative tasks as directed.
• Signing in/out Peace Officers for contracted clients.
• Regular safety checks on officers by radio.
• Emergency notification to supervisors if employees cannot be reached.
• Afterhours emergency call management for contracted clients; relay to on-call departments.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Dispatch Supervisor, the 911 Dispatcher is responsible for 911 Call answer services, Dispatch Services and after-hours communications for Yellowhead County staff, partner municipalities and contracted clients.

Position Responsibilities

• Answer all 911 and related phone lines for multiple municipalities in a courteous and professional manner;
• Gather relevant information to determine the type and severity of the call;
• Reroute calls to the correct agencies;
• Fire Dispatch
• Dispatch appropriate firefighting resources based on call information;
• Prioritize multiple calls to allocate available resources;
• Monitor responder safety by radio;
• Dispatch additional resources as requested by incident commanders;
• Maintain logs and incident reports using provide methods;
• Maintain Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS) data entry;
• Complete paperwork and documentation related to call center operations;
• Ensure the call center is kept in a clean and orderly manner;
• Perform administrative tasks as directed;
• Peace Officer Dispatch
• Signing in/out of Peace Officers for contracted clients;
• Regular safety checks on officers by radio;
• Taking complaint calls in a courteous and professional manner;
• Utilize a variety of programs for processing complaints and assigning to officers;
• Working Alone Monitoring
• Signing in/out of working alone employees for contracted clients;Regular safety checks on officers by radio;
• Emergency notification to supervisors if employees cannot be reached;
• Afterhours Call Center
• Afterhours emergency call management for contracted clients; and
• Taking calls and relaying relevant information to on-call departments.

Qualification, Knowledge, Skill & Ability Requirements

Education/Skills

• Minimum education of Grade 12 or equivalent;
• Post-secondary education in a related field is considered an asset;
• International Academies of Emergency Dispatch certification is considered an asset;
• Emergency Telecommunications certification is considered an asset;
• Experience in emergency dispatch or call-taking preferred;
• Basic training in office software preferred;
• Strong computer and typing skills preferred;
• Understanding of radio communication systems preferred;
• Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License;
• Completion of Defensive Driving;
• Valid Standard First Aid/CPR;

The salary range is $64,649 to $80,165 per year.
