Job Summary:

This position is responsible for supporting operations of UW Veterinary Care (UWVC) Emergency & Critical Care (ECC) and Intermediate Care Ward (IMCW) units. Incumbent will be expected to onboard and train new veterinary staff (CVTs and vet assistants) on basic skills for success in the ECC and IMCW, as well as assisting with hands-on patient care in the small animal hospital.

Responsibilities:
Assists veterinarians in the care of animals. Prepares and performs the most complex animal care procedures or serves as an expert in a specialized animal care area, and serves as a resource and lead to other technicians and student employees.

• 10% Assists veterinarians and researchers in animal care, diagnostic, preventative, research, anesthesia, surgery, post-operative care, euthanasia and radiology procedures under minimal supervision. May perform minor surgical procedures or other minor invasive procedures


• 10% Prepares, completes, monitors, and documents complex technical animal care procedures and work unit activities, assessments, and medication administration according to established care plans and medical necessity


• 5% Keeps records of all controlled substances and inventory records


• 5% Maintains surgical support facilities in sanitized, well-stocked, and in orderly manner; and ensures that preventative maintenance of equipment is performed


• 60% Assists in training new veterinary and/or animal care technicians and supervises work as appropriate


• 10% Maintains records regarding animal treatments, medications, diagnostic procedures, and illness

Tasks:

• Collaborate with Hospital CVT staff trainer, CVT supervisors, and clinical faculty to develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the Emergency Room (ER), Critical Care Unit (CCU), and future Intermediate Care Ward (IMCW).


• Assist UWVC leadership in identifying and addressing knowledge gaps among staff.


• Foster a respectful and positive working environment by engaging with students, staff, and clinicians to enhance morale and commitment to the hospital's mission.


• Collaborate with Hospital CVT staff trainer and CVT supervisors to design and implement structured training programs for ECC and IMCW veterinary staff, including orientation, skill-building assessments, teaching rounds, and clinical procedures.


• Provide timely, constructive feedback to veterinary staff and students in a respectful and direct manner.


• Coordinate and support teaching labs for veterinary staff, offering guidance as needed.


• Identify trends in staff performance and recommend or develop targeted training content to address these areas


• Enhance individual knowledge and skills in instructional leadership and workplace training methodologies


• Support the blood donor program to meet the hospital's evolving needs.


• Assist with troubleshooting and repairing equipment in clinical units, providing training for new staff on effective troubleshooting techniques
