Job summary

Qualicum School District on east Vancouver Island is seeking an Electrician to maintain electrical systems across district facilities, including fire alarms, sprinklers, security, and building automation. You will ensure compliance with codes, WorkSafe BC guidelines, and district procedures.

Reporting to the Director of Operations, you will perform installations, routine inspections, and coordinate with staff, order supplies, and may supervise others.

Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Valid BC Trades Qualification or Interprovincial Trades Qualification in Electrician.
  • Minimum five (5) years' experience, including work experience acquired during apprenticeship.
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license.
  • Valid Emergency First Aid certificate.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff.

Responsibilities

  • Performs installations and maintenance on the electrical and wiring systems of buildings and generating plants.
  • Maintains building electronic devices and systems such as fire alarms and sprinklers, security cameras, network wiring, DDC systems, master time clocks, telephone, public address, emergency light packs, and heating controls.
  • Performs routine inspections of district systems and facilities for preventative maintenance and code compliance.
  • Estimates maintenance and project work as authorized.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots alternate energy sources such as Solar Arrays, Inverters, and Batteries.
  • Orders supplies and equipment as authorized by the General Manager of Operations or designate.
  • May guide/oversee the work of others.
  • Performs other job-related duties.

About Qualicum School District

Qualicum School District is centrally situated on east Vancouver Island and covers the area of Nanoose Bay to Bowser and spans from Errington across the Strait of Georgia to Lasqueti Island. We serve a student population of approximately 4700 students. Qualicum School District consists of eight elementary schools (Grades K-7), two secondary schools (Grade 8-12), an alternate school (PASS/Woodwinds) and a Distributed Learning program to support home-learning families called the Collaborative Education Alternative Program (CEAP). Job Function

An employee in this classification performs maintenance on the electrical systems and other internal systems of the physical plant that are associated with the electrical trade to allow full use of school district facilities and equipment at all times. An employee in this classification also ensures that all maintenance performed is in accordance with applicable codes, WorkSafe BC Guidelines & Regulations, bylaws and procedures in force within the School District.

Director of Operations or Designate.

Illustrative Examples of Work
  • Performs installations and maintenance on the electrical and wiring systems of buildings and generating plants.
  • Performs installations and maintenance on building electronic devices and systems such as fire alarms and sprinklers, security (including security cameras), network wiring, Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems, master time clocks, telephone, public address, emergency light packs, and heating controls.
  • Performs routine and requested inspections of district systems and facilities for the purpose of preventative maintenance and code compliance.
  • Estimates maintenance and project work as authorized.
  • Performs maintenance and troubleshooting of alternate energy source. e.g. Solar Arrays and Inverters and Batteries.
  • Performs project work as requested.
  • Orders supplies and equipment as authorized by the General Manager of Operations or designate.
  • May guide/oversee the work of others.
  • Performs other job-related duties.
Required Abilities and Qualifications
  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Valid BC Trades Qualification or Interprovincial Trades Qualification in the trade of Electrician.
  • Minimum five (5) years' experience, including work experience acquired during apprenticeship.
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license.
  • Valid Emergency First Aid certificate.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff

Successful applicants must successfully complete an Authorization for Criminal Records Search pursuant to the Criminal Records Review Act every 5 years.
