Bird’s Power & Utilities entity is seeking an Estimator with expertise in medium voltage (MV) & high voltage (HV) electrical systems, including substations, switching yards, system expansions, capacity upgrades, transformer and breaker replacements, and powerline construction. This role is critical in developing pre-construction planning, cost estimates, and subcontractor pricing for industrial & utility power projects. A solid understanding of the full T&D power systems will be beneficial and considered an asset.
Based in Edmonton or Calgary, Alberta, this role is ideal for a highly skilled estimator with a passion for MV & HV electrical projects and a deep understanding of industrial electrical power systems.
What You Will Be Working OnPrepare detailed cost estimates, quantity takeoffs, and subcontractor pricing in alignment with company standards.
Pricing vendors and suppliers for active RFP’s.
Assess general expenses and contribute to margin and fee strategies.
Review project specifications and technical documents to define scope and risks.
Identify competitive advantages and strategies for project success.
Collaborate with clients, consultants, and internal teams to clarify project requirements.
Develop preliminary construction schedules to inform cost assessments.
Lead estimate reviews with management and oversee the tender submission process.
Support post-tender negotiations and contribute to project award strategies.
Provide preconstruction services, including budgeting, cost planning, and value engineering.
Establish and maintain strong industry relationships to identify business opportunities.
Maintain a comprehensive database of labor rates, material costs, equipment rates, and project benchmarks.
Develop conceptual estimates by leveraging historical data and industry insights.
A degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology Diploma, Journeyperson Certification, or equivalent in a related field.
5+ years of hands-on electrical estimating experience across a range of project delivery methods.
3+ years of direct experience in MV/HV electrical systems, including substations, switching yards, and T&D infrastructure—gained through fieldwork, project execution, or estimating roles.
In-depth knowledge of electrical estimating principles, tendering procedures, and contract negotiations.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
Experience with estimating software such as Accubid and LiveCount.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Bluebeam.
Exceptional ability to build and maintain relationships with project teams, subcontractors, and clients.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and mathematical skills with a keen attention to detail.
