Job summary

Aker Solutions is seeking an Electrical Specialist in St. John's to provide engineering leadership across studies, tenders, and FEED phases for wind, CO2, hydrogen, and traditional oil and gas projects.

You will drive early technical decisions, align electrical design with interfaces, and mentor junior engineers while engaging with clients and vendors to optimize cost and schedule.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of electrical engineering experience in FEED and/or EPC projects.
• PEGNL P.Eng. registration or eligibility.
• Experience in renewable energy sector and oil & gas design.
• Ability to integrate cross-discipline inputs and communicate clearly with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Develop electrical scope aligned with process, mechanical, and layout disciplines; manage interfaces and dependencies.
• Document and challenge assumptions, design criteria, and system philosophies; communicate risks and opportunities.
• Embed client, regulatory, and safety requirements into electrical design and identify optimization opportunities.
• Engage with vendors early; contribute to cost estimates and execution strategies to improve cost confidence.
• Present technical findings to project leadership and clients; support informed decision making.

Our team in St. John's is growing, and we are seeking an Electrical Specialist to help provide electrical engineering leadership across studies, tenders, and early project phases across new energy projects (Wind, CO2, Hydrogen), Electrical transmission, and traditional oil and gas developments.

This position will drive early technical decision-making by clearly articulating the implications of electrical design choices on cost, schedule, risk, operability, and overall project delivery.

What will you be doing?

• Ensure electrical scope is developed in close alignment with process, mechanical, and layout disciplines, proactively managing interfaces, identifying critical dependencies, and resolving cross-functional challenges to maintain an integrated and cohesive design basis.
• Define, document, and continuously challenge key assumptions, design criteria, and system philosophies, ensuring transparency of risks and opportunities and enabling informed client and project decisions throughout the study and FEED lifecycle.
• Embed client, regulatory, and safety requirements into all aspects of the electrical design, ensuring compliance while identifying opportunities for optimization, standardization, and value improvement.
• Support the maturation of project definition through early vendor engagement, power system studies, and input to cost estimates and execution strategies, contributing to improved cost confidence and reduced delivery risk.
• Maintain clear and proactive communication with project leadership and clients, ensuring engineering developments, key findings, and emerging risks are effectively communicated.
• Present technical outcomes and recommendations in a structured manner that supports informed decision-making and alignment across the project team.
• Support opportunity identification, pursuit, and tender development including estimating workscopes and providing input to project estimates.
• Maintain awareness of market trends, client drivers, technology development
• Deliver integrated solutions
• Influence stakeholders and project teams without direct authority
• Build effective internal networks across engineering, and project delivery functions
• Support development of junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing
• Knowledge of power system analysis tools e.g. ETAP
• Strong front end design experience
• Experience in design construction and operation of electrical power generation, distribution, and transmission systems, along with power system protection and control schemes.

We Think You Should Have

• University Electrical Engineering degree or relevant education with more than 15 years post graduate experience of engineering within front end, FEED and/or EPC projects.
• Current registration with PEGNL as a P. Eng. (or eligible for registration)
• 15+ years of electrical engineering experience
• Experience in design of concept, project studies, FEED verification and detail design in renewable energy sector / oil and gas industry
• Demonstrated ability to integrate cross-discipline inputs and resolve complex technical challenges
• Solid understanding of how engineering decisions impact cost, schedule, operability, and constructability.
• Ability to communicate complex issues clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to see customer needs and develop solutions tailored to client requirements
• Fluent verbal and written communication in English language
