Brief Description

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Electrical EIT will be accountable for executing projects through sound engineering expertise and project management, engaging in relationship‑building activities with clients, and identifying opportunities for Magna IV Engineering. Specifically focusing on solving problems involving power systems, the successful candidate will provide technical expertise, plan and execute projects, provide mentorship, coaching, and leadership to team members, and assist in developing new business; ultimately providing exceptional client service through the completion of power systems projects. Sectors served by Magna IV Engineering include power utilities, gas and oil industry, bulk material handling, pulp and paper, industrial substations, generation facilities, co‑generation units, and others.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of an Intermediate Electrical Engineer include aspects of technical expertise, engineering knowledge of electrical power systems for utilities, heavy industrial customers, and some commercial applications, project management, business development, leadership and mentoring of team members as needed.

Engineering & Design (≈ 75% time)
  • Performance of low, medium, and high voltage electrical design at an engineering authentication level.
  • Design of industrial control schemes, development of control narratives, flex‑logic, and implementations of automatic power transfer schemes.
  • Technical report writing, authentication, and final review of reports prepared by others.
  • Electrical power system studies: load flow, short circuit, arc flash, motor starting, harmonic evaluation, grounding, etc.
  • Protective relay setting development and relay setting file development.
  • Software‑assisted electrical studies with ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, EMTP, CDGES.
  • Application of the Canadian Electrical Code C22.1 Part 1 and IEEE standards related to medium and high voltage installations and studies.
  • Design of low, medium, and high voltage switchgear and substation; design of medium and high voltage protection systems (schematics and wiring); configuration of protective relays (SEL, GE, ABB, etc.).
  • Computation of complex relay settings and logic.
  • Support development of proposals and estimates for areas of practice.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication.
Project Management / Support (≈ 15% time)
  • Oversee all aspects of assigned projects.
  • Plan resources effectively and collaborate with other teams, departments, and regions.
  • Manage projects ranging in value from approximately $10,000 to $500,000.
  • Complete all project deliverables to the satisfaction of clients.
  • Assign staff responsibilities clearly, using leadership and communication skills.
  • Maintain strong client communication and rapport.
  • Ensure safe work processes and a culture of safety are followed.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time, within budgets, and with acceptable profit margins.
  • Complete project invoicing with accounting support timely.
Client Management and Business Development (≈ 10% time)
  • Identify and pursue leads with existing and potential clients; coordinate with Marketing to build confidence in Magna IV Engineering’s capabilities.
  • Network at trade shows, conferences, and seminars.
  • Collaborate with Senior Staff from other teams and offices to share client information and identify shared opportunities.
  • Foster strong client relationships and support team members in establishing them.
  • Identify opportunities for proposals, draft proposals, and negotiate or delegate as appropriate.
  • Develop proposals based on audits, studies, and recommendations in response to client requests.
  • Interact with clients courteously and professionally.
Technical Field Service Support (as required)
  • Perform equipment upgrades, maintenance, testing, and commissioning services for commercial, industrial, and utility customers.
  • Provide on‑site, hands‑on work as needed.
  • Provide project status updates to the Manager.
  • Maintain effective communication with internal and external groups regarding milestone achievements, costs, and opportunities.
  • Ensure completion and submission of all required documents.
  • Complete technical reviews and generate reports.
People Leadership
  • Coach, recognize, and manage performance of project‑assigned personnel.
  • Mentor and provide an always‑open door for staff to ask questions and develop skills.
  • Identify and develop personnel for current and future roles.
  • Support employee engagement practices to attract and retain talent.
Success Measurements
  • Successful completion of engineering projects with minimal errors during quality assurance checks.
  • Effective hours and budget management on projects and assignments.
  • Ability to coach and mentor others while developing own skills in new areas and software (feedback from mentees gathered).
Requirements
  • Minimum four years of experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (minimum).
  • Ability to perform electrical engineering design and studies independently and competently.
  • Capability to design power systems, including switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, cables, trays, e‑houses, distribution centers, protection, and control elements.
  • Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel within Alberta to client sites.
  • Travel to the U.S. considered an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi‑task, exercise good judgment, and prioritize workload.
  • Broad knowledge of industrial, utility, and commercial environments.
  • Capability to create protective relay program setting files in various software platforms (including EnerVista Launchpad and AcSELerator); bench‑configuration of relays is an asset.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to engage, motivate, and work within a team to achieve results.
  • Positive attitude, high self‑motivation, energy, passion, and reliability.
  • Dedicated to providing exceptional client experiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with adept relationship management for interacting with various organizational levels.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible shifts, including occasional weekends, evenings, and statutory holidays.
