Job description

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Intermediate Electrical Engineer is accountable for executing projects through sound engineering expertise and project management, engaging in client relationship building, and identifying opportunities for Magna IV Engineering. The candidate will focus on power systems projects, provide technical expertise, lead and mentor project teams, and support new business development.

Engineering & Design (≈75% time)
  • Low, medium and high voltage electrical design.
  • Industrial control schemes, control narratives, flex‑logic, and automatic power transfer implementation.
  • Technical report writing and final review of reports.
  • Electrical power system studies: load flow, short circuit, arc flash, motor starting, harmonic evaluation, grounding, etc.
  • Protective relay setting development and relay setting file creation.
  • Software‑assisted studies (ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, EMTP, CDGES).
  • Application of the Canadian Electrical Code C22.1 Part 1 and relevant IEEE standards.
  • Switchgear, substation, and protection system design (medium/high voltage).
  • Relay configuration (SEL, GE, ABB, etc.) and complex logic computation.
  • Support proposal and estimate development.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication.
Project Management / Support (≈15% time)
  • Oversee all assigned projects.
  • Plan resources and collaborate across teams, departments, and regions.
  • Manage projects valued from $10,000 to $500,000.
  • Deliver all project deliverables to client satisfaction.
  • Assign staff responsibilities clearly; lead engineering, drafting, QA, etc.
  • Maintain strong client communication and rapport.
  • Ensure safety practices, timely execution, on‑budget performance, and quality control.
  • Handle invoicing and profit margin maintenance.
Client Management & Business Development (≈10% time)
  • Identify and seek leads with existing and potential clients.
  • Coordinate with Marketing for joint client outreach.
  • Network at trade shows, conferences, and seminars.
  • Collaborate with senior staff across teams for shared opportunities.
  • Develop and negotiate proposals; delegate to sales staff as needed.
  • Draft proposals based on client audits, studies, and recommendations.
  • Interact with clients courteously and professionally.
Technical Field Service Support (as required)
  • Equipment upgrades, maintenance, testing, and commissioning for commercial, industrial, and utility clients.
  • On‑site hands‑on work as required.
  • Provide status updates to the Manager.
  • Maintain communication with stakeholders regarding milestones, costs, and opportunities.
  • Submit all required documents and complete technical reviews.
People Leadership (throughout all work)
  • Coach and recognize project‑assigned personnel; manage performance.
  • Provide an open door for staff questions and skill development.
  • Identify and develop talent for current and future roles.
  • Support employee engagement practices.
Success Measurements
  • Successful completion of engineering projects with minimal QA errors.
  • Effective hours and budget management.
  • Coaching and mentoring outcomes, including mentee feedback.
Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years of experience.
  • At least 3 years experience with ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, EMTP, CDGES or equivalent software.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (minimum).
  • Licensed P.Eng. in Alberta (Apega) is an asset.
  • Independent, competent electrical engineering design and study skills.
  • Capability to design power systems, switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, cables, trays, E‑houses, distribution centers, protection and control elements.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to travel within Alberta to client sites.
  • Travel to the US is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi‑task, exercise good judgment, and prioritize workload.
  • Knowledge of industrial, utility, and commercial environments.
  • Experience creating protective relay program setting files; bench‑configuring relays is an asset.
  • Strong leadership and team engagement skills.
  • Positive attitude, self‑motivation, energy, passion, and reliability.
  • Commitment to exceptional client experiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; adept relationship management.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible shifts, including occasional weekends, evenings, and statutory holidays.
