Job description

POSITION MANDATE

Creates schematic designs for electrical systems, based on customer or internal needs. Undertakes design projects from the quote and concept stage through to turnover i.e. design, drawings, documentation and filing, technical reports, fabrication and assembly drawings and related oversight.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Electrical Design

• Works with customers and/or internal contacts to define the scope of project requirements.
• Generates a preliminary design with sufficient detail to illustrate the proposed solution and gains approval for its execution.
• Identifies components that meet requirements and creates a schematic with the required details for the final design for customer projects.
• Generates a final design documents complying with internal and customer guidelines.

Quotations & Project Management

• Defines the scope of proposed projects and submits proposals with a cost estimate or firm quotation in response to customer or internal requests. Proposals include a preliminary design and identification of related resources needed.
• Follows up with customers and/or internal contacts to ensure expectations are and remain aligned.
• Tracks project measurables (e.g. quoted vs actual hours, allocated vs budgeted resources and materials, continuous improvement logs) to assess project profitability, efficiency and quality.
• Maintains current records of all designs, updates improvements on existing designs’ records.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The position requires a CAD/CAM Engineering Technology diploma or equivalent education in engineering design and technology, and 8 to 10 years of pertinent experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

• Establishes solid customer relations from the start of, and throughout, assigned projects.
• Competently scopes projects and consistently delivers preliminary designs that gain approval.
• Plans and generates design drawings that meet customer and/or internal requirements as well as quality and timeline expectations.
• Ensures designs and their components are demonstrably cost effective.
• Plans projects in a manner that ensures job profitability, the meeting of timelines and efficient use of resources, etc.
• Executes projects as planned, delivering error-free, high-quality designs and results as well as meeting “on time, as promised, on budget” standards. Also meets projected profit margins.
• Consistently generates positive internal and external feedback , and review cycle results are positive.
• Mentors Junior and Intermediate Designers.
• Meets electrical standards for designs.
• Complies with relevant policies, procedures, standards and practices, legislation and codes.
• Follows all procedures, work flows and check lists related to the Master Document List.
