Raise is currently hiring an Electrical Engineer Analytical Studies - Substations Growth and Sustainment Department on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader. Our client is one of the largest electrical energy suppliers in Canada

Note: The primary pay rate is based on the rate for an incorporated contractor who owns their own business. However, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in a T4 arrangement, where applicable.

Description

The electrical Engineer in this role will be responsible for conducting in-depth electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies and contributing to the safe and efficient growth of a vital power system for the Analytical Studies team in the Substations Growth and Sustainment Department with this organization. To help manage a growing workload, our client is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant to their team on a part time assignment with 2 days/week - the days/hours will be confirmed by manager. In this role, the candidate will leverage their deep understanding of electrical utility systems and expertise in EMT studies to contribute directly to the planning and engineering of substation infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • The Consultant in this role will be helping to resolve technical challenges when planning for new Load and IPP
  • interconnections and applications of high voltage equipment in the organizations system by conducting Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) studies
  • Identify the impact of those interconnections and equipment application to the system.
  • Responsible for specifying important equipment ratings that meet the transient conditions.
  • Providing support to asset planning and engineering to develop cost efficient and safe solutions.
  • Specific duties:
    • Engages in the engineering of electrical utility systems, specializing in
    • Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) studies.
    • Performs EMT studies such as transformer energization, motor starting, harmonics
    • analysis, IPP interconnection, load interconnection, and prepares study reports.
    • Engages in modeling of renewable energy inverter-based resources (IBRs), e.g.,
    • battery energy storage system (BESS), wind, and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in PSCAD for various studies.
    • Engages in modeling of transformers, circuit breakers, surge arresters, transmission lines, special drives such as VFDs, point-on-wave controllers, and other equipment.
    • Provides necessary support to the planners in the Stations Growth and Sustainment department and other groups.
What You Bring

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in a relevant field within an electricity utility, with a strong and demonstrable track record of technical expertise.
  • Knowledge of high voltage equipment up to 500 kV such as transformers, circuit breakers, shunt and series reactors/ capacitors and their applications and performance.
  • Experience in modelling and running PSCAD, EMTP-RV and ASPEN OneLiner.
  • Knowledge of CSA, IEC and IEEE standards applied to equipment specification andapplication guides.
  • Education and skills
    • Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities. A Master’s degree or higher is an asset.
    • P.Eng and will be required to Provide Proof of Permit to Practice, registered with EGBC when hired
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication and presentation and leadershipskills
Additional Information

  • This is a part time assignment with 2 days/week - the days/hours will be confirmed by manager.
  • Location: The work will be remote - preference will be given to someone who resides in BC, however, Manager is open to remote candidates within Canada as well if they meet requirements.
  • Every contractor must supply their own Windows 10 or 11 Laptop computer for the duration of the assignment.
  • Every contractor must supply their own “Smart Phone”. This is needed to gain access to the Organizations network.
