Job summary

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to support the design, construction, and commissioning of electrical systems for advanced nuclear projects, collaborating with internal teams, vendors, and regulators.

The role reports to the Manager, Engineering and requires a licensed Ontario engineer or eligibility, with 3+ years in design, preferably in nuclear or regulated industries, and strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, or Instrumentation & Control Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 3+ years of design engineering experience, preferably 8 years, in nuclear or other highly regulated industries.
  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in Ontario.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design, construction, and commissioning of electrical systems for the BWRX‑300 reactor, with potential involvement in Instrumentation & Control systems.
  • Review design deliverables including engineering documentation, calculations, and bills of material.
  • Lead and support Design Change Packages including Modifications, Temporary Modifications, and Non-Identical Component Replacements.
  • Provide technical guidance and review/approval of designs and Field-Initiated Changes.
  • Collaborate within an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model to ensure effective coordination across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Interface with engineering vendors, supporting design acceptance and monitoring vendor performance.

Job Overview

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Electrical Design Engineer.

Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, this position is responsible for supporting the design, construction, and commissioning of electrical systems for the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) BWRX‑300 Small Modular Reactor, while collaborating with internal teams, vendors, and regulatory stakeholders to ensure successful project execution.

Key Accountabilities
  • Support the design, construction, and commissioning of electrical systems for the BWRX‑300 reactor, with potential involvement in Instrumentation & Control systems
  • Review design deliverables including engineering documentation, calculations, and bills of material
  • Lead and support Design Change Packages including Modifications, Temporary Modifications, and Non-Identical Component Replacements
  • Provide technical guidance and review/approval of designs and Field-Initiated Changes
  • Collaborate within an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model to ensure effective coordination across multidisciplinary teams
  • Interface with engineering vendors, supporting design acceptance and monitoring vendor performance
  • Support engagement with external stakeholders, including the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)
  • Investigate and resolve field design issues while ensuring compliance with Engineering Change Control (ECC) processes, project schedules, and cost requirements
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, or Instrumentation & Control Engineering or related field
  • Minimum 3+ years of design engineering experience, preferably 8 years, in nuclear or other highly regulated industries
  • Strong experience in electrical systems design; experience with Instrumentation & Control systems is an asset
  • Knowledge of codes and standards required; knowledge of nuclear codes would be an asset.
  • Experience with Engineering Change Control (ECC) processes required
  • Experience working in complex, multi-stakeholder environments and collaborating with external vendors and regulators
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills with the ability to perform in a fast-paced project environment
  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
