Executive Director

Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward (HSHPE), formerly Quinte Humane Society, seeks a compassionate, experienced, and energetic leader to manage its operations. For over 50 years, HSHPE has been dedicated to preventing cruelty to animals through protection, promotion of humane treatment, and community engagement. As a registered non-profit with charitable status, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, and managed by a professional staff and volunteers, HSHPE cares for over 1,700 animals annually, providing shelter, adoption, and veterinary services. The organization recently moved to a new facility designed to enhance animal care and community programs.

The ideal candidate embraces growth challenges, builds stakeholder relationships, and acts as a strong advocate for HSHPE. Previous leadership experience in non-profit or related sectors, along with a track record of organizational management, is essential. The Executive Director will oversee a team of 24 staff and over 400 volunteers, ensuring fiscal health and operational excellence.

Overview of Responsibilities

Board Governance

• Collaborate with the Board to fulfill the organization’s mission and vision.
• Support and guide the organization’s strategic direction.
• Maintain effective communication with the Board, providing timely and accurate information.

Financial Performance and Viability

• Develop resources to ensure financial sustainability.
• Lead fundraising efforts and explore revenue opportunities.
• Manage budgeting and financial reporting.

Organization Operations

• Oversee operational management and staff recruitment.
• Ensure effective administration and compliance.
• Coordinate with committees on capital projects.

Organization Mission and Strategy

• Work with the Board and staff on program development and strategic planning.
• Promote community engagement and organizational visibility.

Qualifications

• University degree or college diploma in management or related field.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive managerial experience, including volunteer management.
• Experience in charitable and fundraising sectors.
• Knowledge of employment legislation.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant software (PetPoint, Funder, PowerPay, Sage 50) is an asset.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
