Job description

About the National Ski Academy

The National Ski Academy (NSA) is an independent boarding school with a mission to maximize individual potential through alpine ski racing excellence, academic achievement, and personal growth. Founded in 1986 by legendary coach Jurg Gfeller, who remains an integral part of our community, NSA is the Canadian destination for high-performance ski racing and academics.

Our home at 200 Oak Street in Collingwood, Ontario includes everything a student-athlete needs to thrive: Tornaveen, a 12,000-square-foot heritage mansion, houses our dormitory, gymnasium, weight room, ski tuning facilities, classrooms, study hall, and dining area led by a full-time chef.

NSA offers an ideal balance of elite training and exceptional academics. We are an Ontario Ministry-inspected private school providing university-level courses for Grades 9 through 12, and we specialize in "education that travels."

About the Role

We are seeking an Education Director to lead and deliver a world-class academic experience that complements the rigour of our alpine program.

As Education Director, you will oversee all aspects of NSA’s academic programming and work closely with the Athletic Director to ensure student-athletes excel both on the slopes and in the classroom. You will also serve as a mentor and leader to NSA teachers, fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-performance learning environment.

This is a part-time position, with flexibility in scheduling during peak and off-peak periods of the school year. Teaching responsibilities may also be required based on program needs and candidate qualifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of NSA’s academic program (Grades 9–Post-Grad), including annual schedule development that aligns with alpine training and meets individual student needs.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with local schools and online education providers.
  • Manage the academic budget and oversee resource planning and expenditures.
  • Complete ONSIS reporting & manage SIS/LMS.
  • Ensure timely, consistent communication with students, faculty, staff, and parents.
  • Coordinate academic logistics, including travel-based learning and ensuring access to course materials.
  • Recruit, mentor, schedule, and evaluate teaching staff; lead performance reviews and professional development.
  • Develop and oversee student guidance plans; monitor academic progress and adapt strategies in collaboration with teachers.
  • Ensure the timely creation of student feedback and comprehensive report cards.
  • Review and sign report cards.
  • Oversee preparation and coordination of Ministry inspections.
  • Work in close partnership with the Athletic Director to ensure academic-athletic schedule alignment.
  • Promote a positive and inclusive student culture through community activities and leadership.
  • Manage student discipline in accordance with NSA’s code of conduct, including parent communication as needed.
  • Support recruitment efforts by engaging prospective families and understanding the broader ski racing landscape.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor of Education; Ontario Certified Teacher; Principal’s Qualification Program (PQP).
  2. Proven academic leadership experience, including curriculum planning, scheduling, and staff supervision.
  3. Experience in guidance, career, and special education or similar student support roles.
  4. Proficient in managing academic operations: budgeting, resource allocation, compliance.
  5. Familiarity with OSSLT administration.
  6. Skilled in experiential and student-centred learning approaches.
  7. Strong relationship-builder with experience partnering with families, online providers, and other schools.
  8. Experience recruiting, developing, and evaluating teaching staff; knowledge of HR practices an asset.
  9. Effective leadership in dynamic environments with diverse learner needs.
  10. Comfort with educational technology and modern communication tools.
  11. Strategic thinker with a collaborative leadership style and a focus on continuous improvement.
  12. Committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and high-integrity school culture.
  13. Fluency in additional languages (e.g., French, Spanish, German) is an asset.
