Job summary

St. Francis Junior High School in Lethbridge is seeking an Education Assistant for a 28.0 hour per week role.

The successful candidate will support students under the guidance of the Inclusive Education Lead, classroom teacher and principal, including those with complex needs and those using augmentative communication systems. The position requires confidentiality and collaboration within a team, with duties including assisting with personal care tasks and adapting to diverse learning needs.

Qualifications

  • Education Assistant Certificate and/or Diploma or Rehabilitation Practitioner Certificate and/or Diploma or equivalent.
  • Brain Story Certification through Alberta Family Wellness (if completed).
  • At least one-year experience working with students with special programming needs.

Responsibilities

  • Support children with a wide range of needs under supervision of Inclusive Education Lead, classroom teacher and principal.
  • Assist with students who have complex sensory needs or challenging behaviours.
  • Assist with augmentative communication systems and personal care tasks as required.

Job description

EDUCATION ASSISTANT – St. Francis Junior High School

This position is open to all internal and external candidates. Prior to employment, successful applicants must provide supporting documents as outlined on our New Employees page.

We are looking to hire a continuous 28.0 hour per week Education Assistant at St. Francis Junior High School in Lethbridge. This assignment is to commence 25 August 2026. This position is covered by the CUPE 1825 Support Staff collective agreement. Please quote Posting #4058377.

The Education Assistant provides support to children with a wide range of needs in the learning environment under the direction and supervision of the Inclusive Education Lead, the classroom teacher, and the principal. This role may involve working with students who have complex sensory needs, exhibit challenging behaviours, use augmented and alternative communication systems, and may require assistance with toileting and other personal care tasks.

The successful candidate must be able to meet the physical demands of the role in order to actively engage students in all aspects of their educational program. Confidentiality is of utmost importance in achieving the common good for all students. Through collaborative team-based structure, the Education Assistant will carry out tasks as assigned by both the daily and program supervisors.

EDUCATION
  • Education Assistant Certificate and/or Diploma or Rehabilitation Practitioner Certificate and/or Diploma or equivalent;
  • Special consideration will be given to candidates who have completed the Brain Story Certification through Alberta Family Wellness https://www.albertafamilywellness.org/training.
WORK EXPERIENCE
  • At least one-year experience working with students with special programming needs.
SPECIALIZED SKILLS
  • First Aid training;
  • Knowing ASL is considered an asset;
  • Supporting Individuals through Valued Attachments Training (SIVA) Certificate;
  • Training and experience with augmentative communication systems;
  • Experience working on academic goals with students who have multiple barriers.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
  • Understands that it is of paramount importance to maintain confidentiality of all aspects of the school community;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Willing to participate in new learning opportunities;
  • Ability to take responsibility for individual student needs;
  • Ability to contribute in a collaborative team-based learning structure.

The starting rate for this position is $25.26 per hour. Holy Spirit Catholic School Division offers a 100% employer paid comprehensive benefit package, supporting the wellness of our employees and meeting the needs of their families.
